The Build Up

Chapter 11: The Build Up Sophia barely slept that night. Julian’s words haunted her. "Madeline was supposed to be part of the plan. A marriage that would solidify her family’s influence over Damian’s business empire. But then… you happened." It wasn’t just about Damian. It was about power. Control. Revenge. And now, she was a target. --- Scene Break: Unveiling the Strategy The next morning, Sophia stepped into Damian’s office, shutting the door behind her. He glanced up from his desk. “You look—” “Tired? Furious? Ready to burn this entire city to the ground?” she interrupted, voice clipped. “Take your pick.” Damian set his pen down, giving her his full attention. “What happened?” Sophia dropped into the chair across from him. “I had a meeting last night.” Damian’s gaze sharpened. “With who?” “Julian Black.” His entire expression darkened. “You went to Julian?” “I needed answers,” she said firmly. “And he gave them to me. You should’ve told me the truth, Damian.” His jaw tightened. “I was trying to protect you.” “Well, congratulations,” she snapped. “Now I’m even more involved.” Silence. Then Damian sighed, leaning back in his chair. “What did Julian tell you?” Sophia’s eyes locked onto his. “That Madeline wasn’t just your ex. She was supposed to be your wife.” Damian exhaled, rubbing his temples. “It wasn’t my choice.” “But she thought it was hers,” Sophia said. “And when you threw her aside, she lost everything she’d been promised. That’s why she’s doing this, isn’t it? Not because she loves you, but because she’s trying to take back what she thinks she’s owed.” Damian nodded slowly. “Yes.” Sophia sat back, crossing her arms. “Then we need to stop her.” A slow smirk curled at the edge of Damian’s lips. “And how do you suggest we do that?” Sophia’s eyes gleamed. “We beat her at her own game.” --- Scene Break: The First Move Sophia spent the next few days digging deeper. If she was going to stand a chance against Madeline, she needed to understand the battlefield. So she started where it all began—Damian’s father’s company. She poured over contracts, business reports, anything she could get her hands on. And slowly, she began to see the cracks. Madeline wasn’t working alone. There were others—board members, investors, powerful figures—who had a vested interest in seeing Damian fail. And if Madeline was their frontwoman, it meant one thing— They were already planning something bigger. --- Scene Break: The Warning That night, as Sophia left the office, she felt it. That unsettling sense of being watched. She quickened her pace, gripping her bag tightly as she reached the parking lot. Then— A shadow moved. Sophia spun around, her heart hammering. A man leaned against a black car, watching her with a lazy, knowing smile. “Miss Carter,” he drawled. “Going somewhere?” She didn’t recognize him, but instinct screamed danger. “I don’t know who you are,” she said carefully, “but you’re in my way.” The man chuckled. “Oh, I think you do know who I am.” He stepped forward. “You’ve been asking questions, haven’t you? Digging where you shouldn’t.” Sophia’s pulse pounded. This wasn’t just about intimidation. It was a warning. “You tell Damian,” the man continued, “that he has a choice. Either he steps down willingly… or we make sure he doesn’t have a company to run anymore.” Sophia’s breath caught. They weren’t just coming after Damian. They were coming after everything. --- Scene Break: A Desperate Alliance Back at the penthouse, Sophia burst through the door, her chest heaving. Damian, who had been pouring himself a drink, turned sharply at the sound. “Sophia? What—” “They threatened you.” His eyes darkened immediately. “Who?” “I don’t know,” she admitted. “But they know I’ve been looking. They know we’re trying to fight back.” Damian’s expression was unreadable. Then, slowly, he set down his glass. “It’s worse than I thought.” Sophia frowned. “What do you mean?” He met her gaze. “I wasn’t going to tell you yet, but… my father is stepping down sooner than expected.” Sophia’s stomach dropped. “What?” Damian nodded grimly. “There’s an emergency board meeting next week. They’re pushing for a vote of no confidence.” Realization hit her like ice. “That’s why they’re coming after you now. If they discredit you, they can stop you from taking over.” Damian’s jaw clenched. “Exactly.” Sophia’s hands curled into fists. “They think they can just force you out?” she hissed. “That Madeline can just walk in and take everything?” Damian smirked slightly. “Apparently.” Sophia exhaled, forcing herself to stay calm. Then she looked him straight in the eyes. “Then we need to fight back.” Damian tilted his head. “And how do you propose we do that?” A slow smile curved Sophia’s lips. “We make them the ones who fall.” Damian studied her for a moment. Then, his smirk widened. “Now that sounds like a plan.” ---
