Chapter 12: The Counterattack Begins
Sophia sat across from Damian in his study, the city lights casting a cold glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
They had spent the last hour piecing together everything they knew.
Madeline wasn’t acting alone. The board was involved.
Damian’s father was stepping down sooner than expected.
A vote of no confidence was being pushed.
And if they didn’t act fast, Damian would be forced out of his own company.
Sophia exhaled, pushing a hand through her hair. “We can’t just sit here and wait for them to make their next move.”
Damian leaned back in his chair, fingers drumming against the armrest. “Agreed. But we need to be smart about this. They have influence. We need leverage.”
Sophia’s mind was already racing. “Then we find out what they’re hiding. If they’re trying to take you down, that means they have something to gain. And that means there’s a weakness.”
Damian smirked slightly. “You think like a strategist.”
Sophia arched a brow. “I think like someone who refuses to lose.”
Damian studied her for a moment. Then, his expression turned serious.
“I have a plan,” he said. “But it’s risky.”
Sophia crossed her arms. “So is doing nothing.”
Damian’s lips curved. “Then let’s get started.”

Scene Break: A Dangerous Proposition
The next morning, Damian made a call.
To Julian Black.
When they met at an exclusive, private lounge, Julian looked amused. “Two meetings in one week? I must be popular.”
Damian didn’t waste time. “What do you know about the board’s plans?”
Julian smirked. “Now, now, Damian. You know information isn’t free.”
Damian slid a folder across the table.
Julian glanced at it, then slowly flipped it open. His smirk faded.
“This…” He whistled low. “This is a very expensive piece of leverage.”
Damian’s voice was calm. “And it’s yours. If you tell me what Madeline and the board are planning.”
Julian chuckled, shaking his head. “Always playing the long game.”
Then, he leaned in slightly.
“They’re setting you up, Damian.”
Damian’s eyes narrowed. “How?”
Julian’s smirk returned. “They’re planting evidence. Fake accounts, financial mismanagement, insider trading. When the vote of no confidence happens, they’ll make it look like you’ve been running the company into the ground.”
Sophia, who had been quietly observing, stiffened.
Damian’s voice was lethal. “And who’s orchestrating it?”
Julian shrugged. “Your dear ex-fiancée is the face of it. But the real power? That would be Harrison Locke.”
Sophia frowned. “One of the senior board members?”
Julian nodded. “And your father’s oldest friend.”
Damian’s entire expression darkened.
Sophia exhaled sharply. “So it’s not just Madeline. This goes deeper.”
Julian smirked. “That’s the game, darling. The question is—what’s your next move?”
Damian’s jaw tightened. “We’re going to turn the tables.”
Sophia’s eyes gleamed. “And we’re going to start with Madeline.”

Scene Break: Setting the Trap
Sophia had never been one for passive revenge.
She preferred something direct. Calculated.
So when she walked into the high-end boutique Madeline was known to frequent, she did so with purpose.
Madeline, draped in designer silk, spotted her instantly.
“Sophia.” Her lips curled. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
Sophia smiled. “Just shopping.”
Madeline smirked. “Or looking for a fight?”
Sophia tilted her head. “Depends. Are you here to talk, or just throw veiled threats?”
Madeline’s eyes gleamed. “You’re getting bolder.”
Sophia stepped closer. “And you’re getting sloppy.”
Madeline’s smirk faltered. “Excuse me?”
Sophia lowered her voice. “I know about the board. The vote. The fabricated evidence. You think you’re untouchable, but you forget—Damian and I aren’t the same. He plays to win. I play to destroy.”
Madeline’s fingers twitched against her designer bag. “You’re bluffing.”
Sophia smiled. “Am I?”
For the first time, Madeline looked uncertain.
And that’s when Sophia knew—they had her rattled.
She turned to leave but paused.
“Enjoy your shopping, Madeline,” she said sweetly. “It might be the last luxury you afford.”
And with that, she walked out.

Scene Break: The War Has Begun
That night, Sophia and Damian sat in his study, their plan solidifying.
“We’re going to expose them,” Sophia said.
Damian nodded. “And we’re going to do it before the vote happens.”
Sophia smirked. “Time to burn it all down.”
Damian’s lips curled. “Let’s give them a war.”
