The Warning

Chapter 8: The Warning Sophia knew the battle had only just begun. Madeline wasn’t the type to back down easily, and that encounter in the office lobby had only confirmed her suspicions. The woman wasn’t just possessive—she was dangerous. But if she thought Sophia would roll over and disappear, she was dead wrong. Later that evening, as she sat in her apartment, a sharp knock at the door startled her. Her first instinct was hesitation. But then she reminded herself—this was Damian’s world now. And whether she liked it or not, she was in it. Taking a steadying breath, she unlocked the door and opened it. A sleek, black envelope lay at her feet. No one was in sight. Sophia’s heart thumped as she bent down and picked it up. The paper felt expensive, the edges embossed in gold. Carefully, she slid a neatly folded card from the envelope. And when she read the words, a chill ran down her spine. “Know your place before someone puts you in it.” No name. No signature. But she didn’t need one. She knew exactly who had sent it. --- Scene Break: A Confrontation The next morning, Sophia stormed into Damian’s office, slamming the note onto his desk. Damian, who had been reviewing some documents, raised an eyebrow at her entrance. “Morning to you too,” he said dryly. She folded her arms. “Read it.” His expression darkened as his eyes scanned the message. He set the card down, exhaling sharply. “Madeline.” “No kidding.” Sophia scoffed. “What are you going to do about it?” He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temple. “She’s trying to rattle you.” “Well, it’s working,” she snapped. “I didn’t sign up for threats.” Damian sighed and stood, moving around the desk to stand in front of her. “I’ll handle it.” Sophia narrowed her eyes. “How?” “I have my ways.” His voice was calm, but there was a quiet menace beneath it. She studied him for a moment, trying to gauge just how serious he was. Damian was powerful—that much was clear. But Madeline? She was relentless. “I don’t want to just sit around and wait for her next move,” Sophia said firmly. “I need to be prepared.” Damian smirked. “You’re tougher than I thought.” She crossed her arms. “I don’t like being bullied.” His expression turned serious. “Then trust me.” Trust. The word sat heavy between them. Sophia wanted to believe he could handle this. But something told her Madeline wasn’t the only enemy they had to worry about. --- Scene Break: An Unwanted Guest That evening, Damian had planned for them to attend a high-profile charity gala—one of those events his father insisted on, a way to maintain their “elite” image. Sophia had barely stepped into the grand ballroom when she felt a presence behind her. “Lovely dress.” She turned sharply, and there she was—Madeline. The woman was dressed in a deep red gown, her lips curved into that infuriating smirk. Sophia forced a smile. “I’d say the same, but I wouldn’t want to lie.” Madeline chuckled. “Feisty. I like that.” Sophia was about to walk away when Madeline’s voice stopped her. “Did Damian tell you about us?” Sophia turned back, her stomach twisting. “What are you talking about?” Madeline stepped closer, lowering her voice. “About how we used to be together.” Sophia froze. Madeline’s smirk widened. “Oh, he didn’t mention it? Interesting.” Sophia’s heart pounded, but she refused to let it show. She wouldn’t let Madeline win. So instead, she smiled sweetly and said, “I guess he didn’t think you were worth mentioning.” Madeline’s eyes flickered with something dark. Just then, a strong arm wrapped around Sophia’s waist. Damian. His grip was firm and possessive, and his voice was calm as he spoke. “Madeline. Didn’t expect to see you here.” Madeline’s lips curled. “You should know by now—I always turn up where I’m least wanted.” Damian’s jaw tightened. “Then let me make this clear—you’re not wanted.” For the first time, Madeline’s smirk faltered. She cast Sophia one last glance before stepping back. “We’ll see about that.” And with that, she disappeared into the crowd. Sophia let out a slow breath. “She’s not backing down.” Damian’s expression was unreadable. “I didn’t expect her to.” Sophia turned to face him fully. “Did you date her?” Damian hesitated. Sophia’s stomach dropped. That was all the answer she needed. He had. And suddenly, this game felt a lot more dangerous than before. ---
