Chapter six:
The G-force slammed me back against the leather seat as the cruiser tore through the rain-slicked streets of the lower sectors. Sirens wailed in the distance, a frantic chorus trying to catch a ghost, but Nikolai was already three steps ahead. He drove with a lethal, terrifying precision, whipping the heavy armored car through narrow alleyways and dodging burning trash barrels without ever taking his foot off the gas.
The neon glow of the city bled across the windshield in streaks of violent crimson and electric blue.
I looked down at my hands. They were covered in dust, grease, and someone else's blood, but they weren't shaking. For the first time in three months, the constant, suffocating terror of being a helpless slum girl was gone. Replaced by ice. Replaced by *Shadow*.
"You're bleeding."
Nikolai’s rough baritone cut through the roar of the V8 engine. He didn't look away from the road, but his right hand left the steering wheel, his heavy, calloused fingers closing possessively over my knee. The heat of his touch burned straight through the torn fabric of my jeans.
"It's not mine," I replied, my voice steady.
"Are you sure?" His grip tightened slightly. "Because if there is a single scratch on you that I didn't authorize, I am going to turn this car around and finish burning that sector to the ground."
"I'm fine, Nikolai. Drive."
He whipped the steering wheel hard to the left, plunging us into the pitch-black maw of an abandoned industrial shipping yard. We wove through towering stacks of rusted cargo containers until we reached a dead end. Nikolai didn't slow down. He aimed the cruiser straight at a massive, corrugated steel wall.
"Brace," he ordered.
I didn't flinch. My memories were still slotting into place like jagged pieces of glass, but I knew this place. Muscle memory told my body we were safe.
A split second before impact, the steel wall seamlessly split apart, revealing a hidden ramp. We shot down into the darkness, the false wall snapping shut behind us. The cruiser skidded to a halt inside a stark, brightly lit underground bunker. It smelled of ozone, weapons-grade oil, and cold concrete. Safehouse Zero.
Nikolai killed the engine. The sudden silence in the cabin was deafening.
He didn't move to open his door. Instead, he unbuckled his harness, turned in his seat, and looked at me. The adrenaline of the firefight was fading, leaving only the raw, scorching tension that had been simmering between us since the moment I walked into his casino.
"Look at me," he commanded softly.
I turned my head. His piercing silver eyes mapped every inch of my face, searching for the girl he had lost. The ruthless syndicate boss who had just slaughtered a dozen men vanished, leaving a terrifyingly intense, devoted man in his wake.
He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the line of my jaw, wiping away a smear of soot.
"You're really back," he whispered, his voice vibrating with a dark, heavy emotion.
"Zenith tried to wipe me clean," I said, leaning into his touch. The phantom ache in my temples was entirely gone, replaced by a razor-sharp clarity. "They took my identity. They took my life." I looked deeply into his eyes, my heart hammering against my ribs. "They took *you* from me."
Nikolai’s restraint snapped.
His hand slid to the back of my neck, his fingers twisting into my hair as he pulled me across the center console. His mouth crashed down on mine. It wasn't a gentle kiss; it was a violent collision of relief, possession, and rage. I tasted copper, rain, and the dark, intoxicating flavor of his scotch.
My hands flew to his chest, gripping the lapels of his ruined charcoal trench coat, pulling him closer until there was no space left between us. Every instinct I had—every lethal, violent impulse that made me the Syndicate's deadliest weapon—purred under his touch. I didn't just remember loving him. I felt it in my marrow.
When he finally pulled back, we were both breathing heavily. He rested his forehead against mine, his silver eyes completely dilated.
"I am going to tear the Zenith board apart piece by piece for what they did to you," he vowed, his breath warm against my lips. "No quick deaths. I want them screaming."
"No," I corrected, pulling back just enough to look him in the eye. A slow, ruthless smile curved my lips. "We are going to tear them apart. Together."
Nikolai’s chest rumbled with a dark chuckle. He pressed one last, hard kiss to my mouth before pulling away and stepping out of the car.
I slid out of the passenger side, my boots hitting the concrete floor. The bunker was lined with heavy weapon racks, encrypted server terminals, and tactical gear. It was everything we needed to start a war.
"Leo said the prototype phase is over," I stated, shifting completely into operative mode. I walked over to the nearest terminal, my fingers flying across the keyboard with perfect, resurrected familiarity. "If they already extracted my biometric data, they have a physical clone of me currently incubating. Where is the primary Zenith lab?"
Nikolai stripped off his ruined trench coat, revealing the tactical holster strapped over his broad shoulders. "Sector 1. The Apex Tower. It’s a fifty-story fortress protected by automated defense grids and a private army."
"Then a frontal assault is suicide," I muttered, pulling up the city's architectural grid on the main screen. "We need to get inside the mainframe, upload a lethal virus to their bio-servers, and physically execute the prototype before it comes online."
Nikolai walked up behind me, his chest brushing against my back. He reached around me, tapping a specific access point on the digital map of the Apex Tower.
"The only way into their isolated servers is through the sub-level maintenance shafts," Nikolai said, his voice a low hum near my ear. "It's a two-person job. One of us handles the security overrides in the control room, the other drops directly into the incubation lab."
I turned around, leaning back against the terminal desk, and met his dangerous gaze.
"I'm taking the lab," I said smoothly. "If there's a copy of me floating in a tank in there, I want to be the one who puts a bullet in its head."
Nikolai smirked, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
"Welcome back to the Syndicate, Shadow. Let's go hunt."
