Chapter 2: Muscle Memory and Betrayal
The steel doors of the private vault hissed shut, sealing them inside a tomb of encrypted servers and gold bullion. The silence that followed was heavy, thick with the weight of a shattered reality.
Elena stared at her own hands. They were trembling slightly, not from fear, but from the adrenaline flooding her system. The fake life she had lived for the past three months—the terrified daughter of a gambling addict in the rotting slums of Sector 4—was bleeding away, replaced by violent, electric flashes of a past she was only just beginning to grasp.
She looked up at Nikolai. The man who had been her tormentor for two weeks was standing just inches away, his silver eyes completely stripped of the cold, calculating mask he wore for the underworld. He looked at her like a starving man who had just found water.
"How much do you remember?" his voice was a low rumble in the quiet vault.
Elena closed her eyes, pressing her fingers against her temples. The headache was blinding. "Pieces," she whispered. "Fragments. The smell of gunpowder on your jacket. The layout of the southern smuggling routes. A safe house in the upper districts." She opened her eyes, meeting his intense gaze. "And... I remember you holding me when the Iron Skulls breached the perimeter."
Nikolai’s jaw clenched. The muscles in his neck tightened as a dark, dangerous fury flared behind his eyes. He stepped away from her, walking toward the back wall of the vault. He pressed his palm against a blank steel panel. A biometric scanner flashed green, and the wall slid open to reveal a massive, hidden armory.
"They took three months from us, Elena," Nikolai said, his voice dropping into a deadly, terrifying calm as he pulled a sleek, matte-black tactical harness from the rack. "They ripped you out of my bed, tortured you, and fried your neural pathways because you were getting too close to their supply lines. I spent the first four weeks tearing this city apart, leaving a trail of bodies from Sector 1 to the docks, just trying to find a trace of you."
He turned around, holding out the harness, along with two curved, obsidian-bladed knives.
Elena stared at the weapons. Her conscious mind didn't recognize them, but her fingers twitched. She reached out, wrapping her hands around the leather grips. The moment the blades touched her palms, a profound sense of comfort washed over her. It was like reuniting with an extension of her own body.
"My favorites?" she asked, testing the perfect, deadly balance of the daggers.
A ghost of a smile touched Nikolai’s lips. "You used to sleep with them under your pillow. It drove me insane." He stepped into her personal space, his hands brushing her waist as he helped her secure the tactical harness over her clothes. The proximity was intoxicating. The lingering confusion in her mind warred with the undeniable, scorching physical chemistry between them. When he pulled the straps tight, his knuckles brushed the bare skin of her stomach, sending a jolt of heat straight to her core.
"We don't have time for a slow recovery," Nikolai murmured, his lips lingering dangerously close to her jawline. "The moment I pulled you out of the slums, the clock started ticking. The Iron Skulls think you're dead. When they find out I've retrieved you, they’ll trigger a city-wide war to finish the job. We have to strike first."
"Where do we start?" Elena asked, her voice steady. The frightened slum girl was dead. Agent Shadow was taking the wheel.
"The Neon Vein," Nikolai replied, pulling a suppressed handgun from the rack and sliding it into his shoulder holster. "It's an underground club in Sector 3. It serves as a money-laundering front for the Iron Skulls, managed by a mid-level rat named Jax. Jax is the one who bought the neuro-wipe tech on the black market. He knows exactly who ordered the hit on you."
Elena spun the obsidian daggers in her hands, her blood singing with a dark, violent anticipation. "Then let's go ask him politely."
The rain had turned into a torrential downpour by the time Nikolai’s armored sleek-black cruiser pulled into the grimy alleyway behind The Neon Vein.
The heavy, synthetic bass from the underground club vibrated through the soles of Elena’s boots as she stepped out into the flooded street. Sector 3 was a neon-soaked nightmare. Holographic advertisements flickered in the smog, casting sickly pink and blue lights over the garbage-choked pavement.
Nikolai stood beside her, the collar of his dark trench coat turned up against the rain. "Jax’s office is on the upper mezzanine, overlooking the dance floor. He’ll have heavily armed security on the door. Four men minimum. Ex-military."
"I take the left two, you take the right?" Elena asked, the tactical jargon slipping off her tongue as easily as breathing.
Nikolai glanced at her, that possessive, dark pride returning to his eyes. "Try to keep up, sweetheart."
They moved through the rusted service doors like ghosts. The hallway leading to the club's interior was bathed in strobing red emergency lights, reeking of cheap synthetic alcohol and sweat. As they pushed through the velvet curtains onto the second-floor mezzanine, the noise was deafening. Below them, hundreds of bodies writhed on a glass dance floor to a deafening industrial beat.
Ahead of them, flanking a reinforced steel door, stood four massive men in tactical gear. The Iron Skull gang tattoos were visible on their necks.
Nikolai didn't even break his stride. He raised his suppressed handgun and fired two shots in rapid succession.
Pfft. Pfft. The two guards on the right dropped to the floor before they even registered the threat, perfect holes drilled between their eyes.
The two guards on the left shouted, reaching for their automatic rifles.
Elena didn’t think. Her body simply reacted.
She launched herself forward, closing the twenty-foot gap in a blur of motion. She slid beneath the panicked spray of bullets from the first guard, driving her left obsidian dagger upward, burying it to the hilt underneath his armored vest. As the man choked, she used his falling body as a springboard, launching herself into the air.
She twisted, bringing her right leg down in a brutal arc, her boot connecting with the final guard's temple with a sickening crack. The man collapsed against the steel door, unconscious before he hit the ground.
Elena landed gracefully in a crouch, pulling her dagger free with a slick, metallic sound. She was breathing hard, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She looked down at the bodies, a thrill of dark satisfaction rushing through her veins.
"Show-off," Nikolai remarked dryly, stepping over the corpses. He didn't even look out of breath. He raised his boot and kicked the heavy steel door dead center. The reinforced hinges shrieked and gave way, the door crashing inward.
The office was lavish, filled with stolen art and stacks of physical currency. Behind a massive glass desk sat Jax, a thin, rat-faced man wearing a gaudy silk suit. He scrambled backward in his leather chair, his eyes wide with absolute terror as Nikolai Vance walked into his sanctuary.
But when Jax’s eyes landed on Elena, all the blood drained from his face.
"No," Jax wheezed, pressing himself against the window behind him. "No, you're dead. The wipe... it was supposed to scramble your brain permanently. You shouldn't even know your own name!"
"Surprise," Elena said, her voice laced with ice. She walked around the desk, her obsidian daggers still dripping onto the expensive imported rug. She grabbed Jax by the collar of his silk suit and slammed his head down onto the glass desk.
"Wait! Wait!" Jax screamed, blood pouring from his nose.
Nikolai stepped up beside Elena, pressing the hot muzzle of his handgun directly against the back of Jax’s skull. "I'm only going to ask this once, Jax. Who gave you the clearance codes to Elena’s safe house three months ago? Who ordered the hit?"
"If I tell you, they’ll kill me!" Jax sobbed, thrashing against Elena’s grip.
"If you don't tell me," Nikolai whispered, c*****g the hammer of the gun, "I won't just kill you. I’ll make sure it takes three days."
Jax let out a pathetic whimper. "It wasn't us! The Iron Skulls couldn't have breached your security network, Vance, you know that! Your firewalls are military grade!"
Elena frowned, pressing the edge of her blade against Jax's throat. "Then how did you find me?"
Jax swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically between Elena and Nikolai. "We didn't hunt you, Shadow! We were hired to do the dirty work! Your own people served you to us on a silver platter!"
The air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees. Nikolai went completely still.
"What are you talking about?" Nikolai demanded, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal register.
"The codes came from inside your own syndicate!" Jax cried out, crying freely now. "Someone in your inner circle, Vance! Someone who has top-tier security clearance. They sold her out to us! They paid us ten million credits to wipe her mind and dump her in the slums so you wouldn't find her body!"
Elena slowly let go of Jax’s collar, stepping back. The implication hit her like a physical blow to the chest.
She hadn't been defeated by an enemy cartel. She had been betrayed by her own family.
Nikolai lowered his gun, his silver eyes cold and distant as he processed the information. The Vance Syndicate was the most powerful organization in the city. Only three people had the security clearance high enough to bypass his personal firewalls. Three people he trusted with his life.
One of them had tried to destroy the woman he loved.
Nikolai turned his head, looking at Elena. The possessive fury in his eyes had mutated into something much darker. A promise of absolute, unholy vengeance.
"Get your things," Nikolai said quietly, the calmness of his voice more terrifying than any shout. "We're going home. And we're going to burn my syndicate to the ground until we find the rat."
