Chapter 11“Is something burning?” Daniel trotted to his oven and checked on the rolls he was baking. The putrid smell of smoke filled his nostrils, but it wasn’t coming from inside the shop. “Oh, my God!” Anna cried. “Daniel, look!” He turned to look in the direction she was pointing. Outside, the air had begun to turn gray as wispy plumes of smoke billowed through the air. “There must be a fire,” she said. She turned to him with wide, nervous eyes. “Does this town have a hand pump engine? Or are we about to become part of a bucket brigade?” Daniel nodded and dusted the flour from his hands. “They purchased one last year, but it’s drawn by horses that will need to be saddled. We can help with buckets until the volunteer firefighters arrive.” The source of the smoke had to be close by.
