An Unexpected Proposal

The rest of the evening passed in a blur of conversations, introductions, and business discussions, but Damian Blackwood could no longer concentrate on any of them. His eyes kept drifting across the ballroom, searching for Aurora without conscious thought. Every time he found her, she was surrounded by influential guests, speaking with effortless confidence and wearing a smile he hadn't seen in years. It was a smile she had once reserved for him. Now it belonged to a world that no longer included him. The sight left an ache in his chest that grew heavier with every passing minute. Not far away, Adrian Sterling was speaking with Aurora while his son, Ethan, happily ate a slice of chocolate cake. The little boy seemed completely comfortable around her, laughing every time she teased him about the chocolate on his face. "You should wipe your mouth," Aurora said, handing him a neatly folded napkin. Ethan looked up at her with a mischievous grin. "Daddy says chocolate tastes better when it makes a mess." Aurora laughed, glancing at Adrian. "Is that true?" Adrian shook his head with an embarrassed smile. "I've clearly been misquoted." Their shared laughter drew the attention of several nearby guests. One elderly businesswoman smiled knowingly. "They look like a family already." Although the comment was made in passing, Damian heard every word. His expression darkened. For the first time since the divorce, he realised that another man could walk into Aurora's life. Another man could appreciate her kindness. Another man could build the future he had carelessly thrown away. The thought unsettled him far more than he cared to admit. As the gala drew to a close, the chairman of the organising committee stepped onto the stage once more. "Ladies and gentlemen," he announced, "before tonight concludes, we have one final presentation." A large screen descended from the ceiling. "This year's Children's Hope Foundation is launching a nationwide programme to build hospitals for disadvantaged children. We are honoured to announce that Kingsley Global Holdings has pledged the first donation." Applause echoed throughout the ballroom. The chairman smiled. "A donation of fifty million pounds." The audience gasped before breaking into even louder applause. Alexander gently gestured towards Aurora. "This was my granddaughter's decision." Every eye turned towards her. Aurora accepted the microphone with quiet humility. "No child should ever lose their future because they cannot afford medical care," she said softly. "We cannot change every life, but we can certainly change someone's life. If we have been blessed with abundance, then we also carry the responsibility to give others hope." Her words touched everyone present. Even hardened executives found themselves applauding with genuine admiration. Damian stood silently among them. He finally understood why people respected Aurora. It wasn't because she was wealthy. It was because her compassion remained unchanged, no matter where life placed her. After the presentation ended, guests gradually began leaving the hotel. Aurora thanked the organisers before walking towards the entrance. She had barely stepped outside when she heard footsteps behind her. "Miss Kingsley." She turned. It was Adrian. Little Ethan stood beside him, holding his father's hand. "I hope I'm not interrupting." "Not at all." Adrian smiled. "I wanted to thank you properly for looking after Ethan tonight." "It was nothing." "It meant a great deal to him." He looked down at his son. "Ethan." The little boy immediately stepped forward. He held out a small drawing folded neatly in half. "I made this while Daddy was talking." Aurora accepted it curiously. When she unfolded the paper, she found a crayon drawing of three people holding hands. One was clearly Adrian. Another was Ethan. The third wore a blue dress. Aurora couldn't help smiling. "It's beautiful." Ethan looked up hopefully. "That's you." Aurora's heart softened. "And why am I in the picture?" "Because Daddy smiled tonight." The innocent answer caught both adults off guard. Adrian looked away awkwardly. "My son says whatever comes into his mind." Ethan frowned. "But it's true." "You don't smile much." "You smiled when you talked to the pretty lady." Aurora laughed softly while Adrian rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment. "I apologise." "Please don't." She folded the drawing carefully. "I'll treasure it." As they spoke, Damian stood several metres away beside his car. He had witnessed the entire exchange. Victoria approached him with visible frustration. "We're leaving." Damian didn't move. "Damian." Still no response. She followed his gaze and saw Aurora standing with Adrian and Ethan. Her expression immediately hardened. "So that's why you won't leave." Damian finally spoke. "Go home, Victoria." She stared at him in disbelief. "What?" "I'll arrange another car for you." Her pride finally snapped. "You've been watching her all night." "You barely spoke to me." "And now you're dismissing me because another man is talking to your ex-wife?" Several guests walking towards the car park slowed their steps, sensing the tension. Damian kept his voice calm. "This isn't the place." "No." Victoria replied bitterly. "The truth isn't convenient anymore, is it?" She laughed coldly. "You ignored Aurora because you thought she was ordinary." "Now that she's the richest woman in the room, suddenly you can't stop looking at her." Her words hit Damian like a blow. Before he could answer, Victoria shook her head. "I used to think you loved me." "Now I think you only love whatever you've lost." She turned and walked away without another word. Damian made no attempt to stop her. Because deep down... He wasn't sure she was wrong. Meanwhile, Aurora prepared to leave when Adrian spoke again. "I know this may sound sudden..." She looked at him curiously. "...but Kingsley Global and Sterling Holdings are both attending the International Business Summit in Switzerland next month." Aurora nodded. "I've seen the schedule." "If you don't mind..." He smiled warmly. "Perhaps we could have dinner while we're there." Aurora hesitated. She had no intention of rushing into another relationship. But this wasn't a romantic invitation. It was a simple business dinner. "I'd be happy to." Ethan jumped excitedly. "Yay!" Adrian laughed. "I think my son just accepted on your behalf." Aurora smiled. "I don't mind." As she stepped into her car, she noticed Damian watching from across the driveway. For a brief moment, their eyes met. Neither smiled. Neither waved. Then Aurora's car pulled away, disappearing into the night. Damian remained standing in the hotel entrance long after the taillights had vanished. He had spent three years believing Aurora would always wait for him. Tonight, for the first time... He watched her drive towards a future that might no longer have any place for him. Just as he turned to leave, his phone rang. The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar international number. He answered cautiously. "This is Damian Blackwood." A calm male voice responded. "Mr. Blackwood, my name is Dr Nathan Wells." "I'm calling from St. Mary's Medical Centre." Damian frowned. "I think you've got the wrong number." "No, sir." The doctor's voice grew more serious. "I believe I have information concerning your former wife..." He paused before delivering the words that caused Damian's heart to stop. "I think you should know that Miss Aurora Kingsley was pregnant on the day your divorce was finalised."
