Two years before meeting Cleo in the hospital, Sheila got sober. She attended the Church of Christ in Wichita. Her family were devout Christians, and though she once fell from grace, she stopped drinking and became involved in church again. Getting sober was no easy task. Sheila’s addiction was one matter, being a woman another. There were few women alcoholics or at least ones that admitted it. She was the only woman in AA meetings in Wichita. Because of liquor, she fell from the church but kept a relationship with God as best as possible. She liked how the 12 steps of recovery are rooted in spiritual principles. God was her higher power.
Blessed to have found AA, Sheila learned so much in her restoration and wrote journals. She wrote about the daily struggles of suffering from alcoholism
