The way he never checked his phone when Noah was talking.

And that scared her.

“Is that a good thing?”

“No.”
“Why?”

“That loving someone doesn’t mean forcing them to choose you.”

“You know what?”

“Being brave doesn’t mean you never fall.”
Noah looked at him.
“It means you get back up.”
Ella watched quietly.
Because that was the lesson Lucas was learning too.

“Someone who helped Amelia five years ago has been found.”
Ella froze.
“Who?”
Lucas looked at the file in his hand.

“Your father.”
