So, winter passed like a haggard and miserable old man with a wooden leg. Spring passed too like an old girl (a spinster) with withered cheeks, bitter, unsmiling and unhappy that she didn’t get to love and be loved. Now, it smells like summer. When I say that it smells like summer in Athens, don’t imagine that it has any similarities with summer on the island! There, when summer comes, the fig trees’ milk smells sweetly, the smell of the sea energises you – you have its salty taste in your mouth. Here, now that the weather got warmer and the windows stay open – along with those at the air shaft – we can smell in the house the foods of all the building’s tenants; and their toilet smells as well. We also have some hungry rats as visitors and several cockroaches who are always free to enter
