Chapter 1: The Wrong Door
Lila POV……
I knew today was going to be a bad day when I had a little fight with the driver that brought me here, and then this elevator.
I stood in front of the elevator, pressing the button for what felt like the hundredth time.
Frustration crawled across my face.
Following the directions I got from the receptionist, I had finally managed to locate the elevator, and now this?
I glanced at my wristwatch again and immediately looked away.
I couldn’t. Looking at the time would only make me panic even more.
“Gosh! What do I do? How can the elevator go bad on me?”
I paced back and forth, desperately searching for another alternative.
Maybe there were stairs. Or something else.
The receptionist had already told me the interview was happening on the third floor.
I hit my forehead. “No option…”
The words died on my lips when I suddenly spotted a door.
I stopped.
EMERGENCY ACCESS. STAFF ONLY.
I stared at the sign for a few seconds, my mind racing with a thousand thoughts.
Could this possibly lead to the interview room? But it clearly said staff only.
Wouldn’t it be trespassing if I went through there? What if someone caught me using the door? Wouldn’t they think I was some kind of spy?
The more I thought about it, the more reasons I had not to use the door.
But even as those thoughts raced through my mind, my legs continued moving toward it.
Turns out, I was more desperate than I was scared.
I just had to be smart.
I would make sure no one caught me using the door. I would sneak in, find the interview room, and pretend nothing happened.
Simple.
I took a deep breath as I stood in front of the door.
“I’m not doing anything wrong. I just want to get to my interview room.” I took another deep breath.
Slowly, I reached for the doorknob and turned it.
The door opened much faster than I expected.
I stopped for a moment. What was I even thinking?
Was I in some kind of novel where the main character opens a random door and suddenly finds herself in the middle of something mysterious?
I almost laughed at myself.
But then, for some strange reason, a deep sense of fear began to crawl through me.
I couldn’t explain it. Something felt wrong.
Still, I stepped inside. And the moment I did, the door slowly creaked shut behind me.
My heart skipped. I turned around and stared at it.
Why was I suddenly so afraid? I swallowed hard and continued walking deeper inside.
I held my chest, trying to calm the tension building inside me. Why was I feeling this way? What could possibly go wrong?
“Please, don’t do this.” I heard it loud and clear.
I froze. What was that?
First it came as a silent echo, and then a full sound, “please….don’t”
Was I imagining things because of the fear knotted in my stomach?
And who would be saying that in a lonely place that smelled of cobwebs and decay?
My fear intensified as I looked around. I couldn’t have heard wrong.
“Please, don’t do this, Don Maurice.” This time, I couldn’t move.
Something inside me screamed, Run! But for some unknown reason, my legs remained rooted to the ground.
Snap! I jolted back to my senses.
What was I doing?
I forced my legs to move, using every ounce of strength I had left. My heart pounded violently as I hurried toward the door.
“Who is that? Can’t you hear that?”
My chest felt like it was about to explode, and my legs nearly gave way beneath me.
I looked around frantically and spotted a large drum pushed against a wall. I didn’t know what came over me, but the next thing I knew, I was hiding behind it, shaking and trembling uncontrollably.
From my hiding spot, I saw a tiny door c***k open.
A tall, muscular man stepped out, dragging another man by the collar. He pulled him carelessly across the floor like he was nothing more than a common thief.
Another man followed behind him.
The first man suddenly stopped and looked around.
“I’m certain I heard footsteps.”
He signaled to the man behind him to hold the prisoner while he stepped away.
My heart pounded harder as I watched him take another step.
Then he looked around again. My chest tightened.
He reached into his clothes and pulled out a gun.
A gun? I gasped, almost screaming.
My hands flew to my mouth, silencing me before the sound could escape.
“Before we find any motherfucker sneaking around here, let’s finish him first.”
The gun was pointed directly at the face of the terrified man.The same man who had been pleading for his life.
I squeezed my eyes shut.
BANG!
A deafening sound echoed through the room. My eyes flew open.
And the next thing I saw was the man’s lifeless body slumping to the floor.
I could feel the bile rising up my throat, and before I could stop it, I vomited all over the floor.
“Oh God! I’m dead.”
The men were staring directly at my hiding spot now.
“God, please…”
I looked around frantically. The entrance door wasn’t far from me. I knew I couldn’t stay there anymore. I had to reach it before they reached me.
If I made the right move, I could get out of there alive.
And I was betting everything I had on it.
Without thinking twice, I crawled out from behind the drum and hurried toward the door. I had to do everything in my power to get there.
I glanced over my shoulder. The men were already walking toward the drum.
I quickened my pace. My bag collided with the wall, and a few of my belongings spilled onto the floor.
I stopped for half a second. But I knew picking them up would mean risking my life.
I looked back. They had quickened their pace too.
My heart pounded wildly. Without thinking twice, I ran.
Finally, I reached the door. I grabbed the doorknob and pulled it open.
Then I ran. I ran as far and as fast as my legs could carry me.
