The black sedan sped through the city streets before turning into a long, private driveway lined with towering oak trees.
At the end of the road stood the Kingsley Estate.
Amara stared through the window in disbelief. The mansion looked more like a palace than a home, its grand stone walls glowing beneath the evening lights.
"You live here?" she asked quietly.
Adrian kept his eyes ahead.
"It's just a house."
She almost laughed. To someone who had worried about paying rent only hours ago, this was far beyond "just a house."
The car stopped.
As soon as Adrian stepped out, doctors and nurses hurried across the entrance hall. House staff rushed from one room to another.
"What happened?" Adrian asked.
"The chairman suffered a mild heart attack," the family doctor replied. "He's awake now, but he's asking for you."
Adrian turned to Amara.
"You don't have to come in."
"I'm already here."
He nodded, and together they walked upstairs.
---
The old man lying in bed looked weak, but his sharp eyes immediately settled on Amara.
"So..." he said with a faint smile. "You've finally brought her."
Adrian froze.
"Grandfather..."
The old man waved him silent.
"You must be Amara."
She stepped forward respectfully.
"Yes, sir."
He reached for her hand.
"I've been waiting a long time to meet the woman who finally convinced my stubborn grandson to think about more than work."
Amara glanced nervously at Adrian.
Neither of them corrected him.
Instead, Adrian simply said, "Grandfather, you need to rest."
The old man chuckled.
"I'll rest when I know you're not going to spend the rest of your life alone."
He looked back at Amara.
"Take care of him. He pretends to be strong, but he's carried this family on his shoulders for years."
She smiled softly.
"I'll do my best."
For the first time that day, Adrian looked at her with genuine gratitude.
---
As they left the room, a woman's voice echoed down the hallway.
"So she's the replacement."
Amara turned.
A glamorous woman in a designer dress stood at the top of the staircase, her expression cold.
She slowly descended the stairs.
"I'm Vanessa Brooks."
She extended her hand, but her smile never reached her eyes.
"Adrian's former fiancée."
The hallway fell silent.
Amara felt the air grow heavy.
Vanessa looked her up and down before speaking again.
"You don't belong here."
Adrian stepped between them.
"That's enough, Vanessa."
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Oh, Adrian... you really think this little contract will save you?"
Amara's eyes widened.
How did Vanessa know about the contract?
Before anyone could respond, Vanessa leaned closer and whispered just loud enough for Amara to hear.
"Be careful. The Kingsley family doesn't just break promises..."
"They break people."
With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Amara standing motionless.
For the first time since agreeing to the contract, Amara wondered if she had made the biggest mistake of her life.
