CHAPTER TWO:THE CLAUSES

481 Words
Amara's heartbeat echoed in the silent office. She stared at Adrian Kingsley, searching his face for any sign that he was joking. She found none. "A contract wife?" she repeated. "Yes." "You don't even know me." "I know enough." Amara shook her head and stood up. "I think you've mistaken me for someone else." "You are Amara Collins," Adrian said calmly. "Twenty-four years old. You graduated with honors in Business Administration. Your mother is in the hospital, your landlord has given you seven days to pay your rent, and your younger brother may be forced to leave school because of unpaid fees." Her face turned pale. "How do you know all that?" "I make it my business to know everything before making an offer." He slid the contract across the desk. "This marriage will last one year." Amara looked down at the document but didn't touch it. "What happens after one year?" "We divorce. Quietly. You receive the compensation we agreed upon, and we go our separate ways." "Why me?" Adrian walked toward the window overlooking the city. "Because I need someone who has no connection to my world." He paused. "And someone I can trust." Amara laughed bitterly. "You trust a complete stranger?" "I trust that you need this opportunity as much as I need your help." The room fell silent. Slowly, Amara opened the contract. The first page listed the rules. Clause One: The marriage will remain confidential until officially announced. Clause Two: The couple will appear together at business and family events. Clause Three: Neither party may date another person during the contract period. Clause Four: Personal feelings must never interfere with the agreement. Amara frowned. "That's an unusual clause." "It is necessary." She turned another page. Then she stopped. There was one final clause. The words were covered by a sealed envelope attached to the contract. "What is this?" Adrian's expression hardened. "That clause stays sealed until the day you sign." "You expect me to sign a contract without reading all of it?" "You'll know everything before the wedding." Amara folded her arms. "I don't make decisions like this overnight." "You don't have to." He handed her a business card. "You have forty-eight hours." As she reached the door, Adrian spoke again. "If you walk away, nothing changes." She stopped but didn't turn around. "Your debts remain. Your mother's treatment ends. Your brother leaves school." His words hit harder than she wanted to admit. She left the office with the contract in her hands, but for the first time in her life, she wasn't sure whether accepting the offer would save her family—or trap her in a life she could never escape. Somewhere in the city, someone watched her leave the building. A voice on the phone whispered, "So... she finally met him." The call ended with a chilling promise. "Don't let that wedding happen."
