Trudy's Secret

***Trigger warning: This chapter contains turbulent emotional events Trudy’s POV: When Alistair and I had walked into the cafe and saw Dawn sitting with some guy we never met before, we knew something was up. We found out his name was Ace and that he was a new friend of Dawn's. This man was so sexy someone needed to call the fire department because he was smoking! However I could look into his eyes and tell that he was definitely into Dawn. I almost felt bad for the guy because if Dawn thought a guy liked her she would quickly convince herself it was just a joke. That they wouldn’t ever like her because she was too different or not beautiful. It was how she protected herself. Ever since kindergarten and all the way up to middle school Dawn was picked on because of her eyes that were two different colors, her freckles, and her choice to dress more boyish then the other girls. In eighth grade a boy she had a crush on had slipped a note into her locker telling her to meet him outside by the gym’s door. When she went to meet him,It was all a sick sadistic joke. The guy along with his girlfriend and her friends were there to do nothing but verbally assault her. What made it even worse was that they took a video of it and sent it to half the kids in our grade. Alistair started shunning us,and started trying to blend in with the cool kids that were making fun of Dawn. Which made me start to hate him. When the school learned of the video they called Dawn into the office. Dawn refused to tell anyone who had made the video. I figured it out because I recognized the jerks' voices, but Dawn begged me not to tell. She didn’t want to get picked on even more. She spent the rest of the school year hearing those insults. She endured by keeping quiet and diving into studying. I often still felt pain for her when I thought of those days. Dawn was more than a friend to me, I loved her. I was in love with her. Yet I could never let her know that. I felt guilty for deceiving her every single day. In ninth grade I could tell that Dawn started getting feelings for Alistair. It was our first year of high school. Alistair and his brother had been away all summer at his Uncle Henry’s house. When he came back the boy had grown almost a foot taller. His voice was deeper, he had grown his hair out longer, and he had started working out. Dawn had begged her mom to take her shopping to get some girlier clothes. Dawn seemed to feel better with the new clothes and had started getting over what happened in middle school. She was also trying to get Alistair to notice her. It had upset me more than anything to be honest. I hated Alistair, he turned his back on our friendship, on Dawn in her time of need. Alistair didn’t deserve Dawn I had told myself. Dawn was caring, and strong, and he wouldn’t appreciate her. So I did the only thing I could think of to keep her away. I put our friendship on the line. I told her that I was in love with Alistair too. I told her our friendship had meant more to me than getting to date him. She agreed and we promised each other that neither of us could go after him or tell him how we felt. It worked for a while. We got through ninth grade and most of tenth. She put Alistair out of her mind. It helped that the jacka*s avoided us like the plague. I knew she never stopped wanting him though. Then as the end of tenth grade approached tragedy ravished Dawn's Life again. Her mother was killed by a drunk driver while visiting Dawn’s Aunt in California. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Dawn never even got to say goodbye. Dawn’s mom was like a ray of sunshine, and I used to dream about if Dawn ever returned my feelings in the way I wanted her to, that her mom would be my mother in law one day. Dawn’s dad couldn’t accept it for a long time and he checked out of reality. Alistair had the audacity to show up at the funeral crying when he saw Dawn’s mom laying there. The three of us used to spend all day at Dawn’s house, and her mother almost felt like a second mom to us. I didn’t care how he felt though. He shouldn’t get to show up out of the blue and act all broken up about it. I remember how he went and embraced Dawn and let her sobb into his chest. This only made me resent him more. Afterwards he started trying to come back and salvage the friendship. I didn’t have the foundation to argue that he didn’t deserve our friendship because I was supposed to be in love with him too. If I told Dawn that we should stay away from him and that he didn’t deserve our friendship she might have figured out that I lied to her. I had decided to swallow my pride and let Alistair slide his way back into our good graces. I decided that hating him wasn’t going to help me. So as time went by I slowly let it go, by the middle of eleventh grade we were all thick as thieves again. I still thought he was an as*, but most of the time he was chill. We all started doing karaoke together as a way to strengthen our friendship As usual we sat here at our table, as we’ve been doing almost every week since the owner of The Cafe, Jimmy, turned this side into a karaoke lounge. We had already put our names on the list and placed our food orders when Ace and Dawn went up on stage to sing their song together. I felt a little jealous that Dawn was singing with him, normally she would sing a song or two with me. I had decided to focus my efforts on glaring or kicking Alistair whenever he was showing his annoyance at having another guy Dawn was giving all her attention to. It made me laugh to myself. It seems like Alistair can’t handle some competition. Although he has been too dense to realize that he and I have been in competition for years. The music had started when Kelly, the waitress came back and put our drinks on the table. All of a sudden a heavenly voice sang out catching us all off guard. Alistair, Kelly, and I all looked at the stage where Ace stood singing. We were flabbergasted, our jaws dropped. I clearly had heard Ace tell Dawn that he hadn’t ever sung before. I looked at Dawn’s face and she looked just as shocked as we did. She closed her mouth and started to sing her part. I could tell she was nervous. Then the realization of the song they were singing together washed over me. I looked at Alistair and he looked pissed. I was too, but I was just better at hiding it. Who did this Ace guy think he was? Was he trying to seduce our girl? When he reached out and took her hand he started to stare into her eyes. Dawn seemed to be lost in his eyes as they sang back and forth to each other. Panic hit me as the song came to a close and they were just inches away from a kiss. When the audience started clapping it seemed to break this guys spell over her. She had quickly put her mic back into the stand and stepped off stage. She started walking back to our table. Ace was close behind her. “Son of a b*tch.” Alistair said under his breath. I didn’t kick him this time because I agreed. When Dawn and Ace sat back down Alistair went to perform. A few moments later Dawn was jumping up to go outside. A couple of minutes had passed when Ace stood up. “Excuse me.” He said as he ducked out the door. I looked up on stage at Alistair, who was still on stage singing. He made a face and I shrugged in response. Kelly had come over with the food and set it down on the table. “Hey Kelly, could you tell the people who signed up after me that they can go on next. I don’t really feel like singing anymore and bring us some to go plates.” I said with a smile. “Sure thing.” Kelly said before walking away. Alistair finished his song and stepped off stage. He went straight out the door after them. I sat and ate Alistair’s fries and drank my lemonade. Kelly handed me two to-go containers and helped me pack up the pizza slices before she went to tend another table. Alistair came back in the door and came to grab his keys off the table. “What’s wrong?”I said with concern in my voice. “You can have all my fries, and here is the money to pay for my stuff and your lemonade.” he said as he tossed a ten dollar bill on the table before heading for the exit. A few seconds later Dawn came back in the door. Looking nervous,I shot her a wtf is going on look but she just kept walking after Alistair. I started to get up. I grabbed my purse and the money for the food. I waved to Kelly so she could come and check me out. Then Ace came in the door. He walked over to me. “Where did Dawn go?'' he said. “She went outside after Alistair, what the hell is going on?” I said trying to sound as intimidating as possible. Ace let out a small snort, as if he was amused by it. “Did you just snort at me?” I said with a shocked expression. “Yes, and I’m sorry, it kind of just slipped out.” He said slightly sheepishly. “Just grab your container there and come pay for your food. I need to see what is going on.” I said as I walked towards the counter. Kelly cashed us out quickly. Ace had insisted on paying for Dawn’s food and I didn’t want to waste time arguing with him. We walked out the front door and walked about five feet when we both froze. In front of us a few feet away was Alistair and Dawn locked in a passionate kiss. It felt like my heart was getting squeezed and I couldn’t breathe. I felt the warm tears slide down my face. I watched as Alistair turned and got in his truck and drove away. I started to feel so angry I felt as if I would scream. Dawn turned around and I had caught the smile on her lips as it quickly faded when she saw us. “Shit.” I heard her whisper. “Um,uh, it’s not what it looks like Trudy!” she said “Oh okay then what is it then!?” I yelled Dawn looked shocked that I was yelling. I know she always believed me to be calm and collected. “Trudy you are always so reserved.” she would often say to me. Well now I was yelling at the girl I’ve been in love with for years with reckless abandon in a parking lot. “You promised me, you said you wouldn’t,you promised!” I yelled before heading to my car. Dawn ran to try to meet me before I got to my car. “Please Trudy wait, let me try to explain. I’m so sorry, I know I messed up. I won’t do it ever again, I don’t want to lose you!” Dawn begged. “Why don’t you want to lose me?” I said, staring her down. A part of me wished that she would confess her love for me, but I knew it wouldn’t happen. “You're my best friend. We’ve been together practically our whole lives. You are the part that keeps me whole. You helped me get through so many times in my life when I just wanted to die. You're like my sis-” Dawn went to say before I cut her off. “Don’t say sister…just don’t.” I said before opening my car door and jumping in. I started to leave. Dawn kept calling out my name, begging for me not to go. I wasn’t really angry at her, I was angry at myself for allowing my heart to be broken. My feelings for her had grown so strong that I couldn’t hold them in. Seeing her kissing Alistair broke me. He had stolen her first kiss and I had to stand there and witness it. Half of me knew I wouldn’t tell her, and that I would just keep holding these feelings in, in hopes that one day they would evaporate. While the other half of me was delusional, thinking that one day she would come and say how she was in love with me all along. What a stupid girl I was I thought as I drove home. How was I going to look her in the face after this.
