Trudy and I threw our bags into Trudy’s 96 Jeep Wrangler. It was a beautiful mulberry purple color and it fit her perfectly. Especially when she wore her glasses. Trudy had worn glasses most of the time, she had started using contacts more when we started 12th grade.
Alistair had thrown his pack in his brother’s 72 Ford Bronco.
It had been revamped with forest green paint and beautiful orange-brown seats. Trevor was great with cars. I was confident that he could build an entire car with his bare hands. He would often fix Trudy’s jeep for her, for free if she asked enough.
“Hey we are going to head back home,I’ll meet you guys at the cafe later?”Alistair said with a questioning look.
“Yeah sure we will see you there at 7:30?” Trudy said, glancing over at me for confirmation.
I shook my head yes.
“Sounds like a plan.” He said hopping in the Bronco with Trevor. Trevor was ready to honk the horn telling him to hurry up.
Trudy started the Jeep and headed back to town.I stared off into the trees thinking about the strange guy. I wondered why his kisses were so electrifying.
“Hey Trudy, I’m going to take a little nap.”I said to her as I felt my eyelids become very heavy.
I heard her say “Sure go ahead.” before sleep took me.
Ace POV:
It seemed like I was running for hours. In actuality I was just running in a big circle around our territory.
My fathers words kept replaying in my head.
How was I going to stop this.
If I had known where my mate was I would have already been with her.
I came to a clearing in the trees and morphed back into my human form.
I think better as Ace.
My wolf Felix is better at protecting and fighting.
I took my briefs out of my bag. I slid them on before putting my black jeans on over them.I sat by the edge of the water and tried to think of a plan.
Minutes went by and I wasn’t thinking of anything.I decided to go for a swim to calm down. I would’ve jumped in the shower back home, but I wasn’t going back right now. I swam in the water for a few minutes and tried to clear my head. I turned over and put my face down into the water and tried to relax. The stream wasn’t that deep it was just enough to be able to swim. I could definitely stand on my feet. I tried to shut my mind off. I had started to analyze everywhere that I had looked for my mate so far. I frequented every party and social gathering at other packs I could. Most of the time werewolves mate with other werewolves. I couldn’t help but feel like I didn’t have a mate.
My brother had found his mate when we turned 19. Cheyenne came from a neighboring pack. She was coming to visit her cousin Laura and came to our birthday party. My brother and I were blowing out our candles when he smelled her. Guess his wish came true. He pounced on her coming in the door. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
I never thought about what my mate would be like. I always figured whoever I got was cool with me. My main reason for waking up was to be alpha. Besides preparing for when I’m alpha, little else mattered to me. Perhaps the moon goddess felt I didn’t deserve a mate.
Would my brother be better than me as Alpha?
No, I refuse to just give up. I’ll make my father see it my way. I don’t have time to wait for my mate. My mate may never come. I snapped back to my senses and noticed someone was close to me in the water. Who on earth was here?
The water had subdued my ears and I couldn’t smell underwater. I quickly jolted out of the water ready to attack if necessary. A woman’s face came into view, along with the wonderful scent of lavender and vanilla. She looked surprised and scared. My face softened. Felix started to push me aside and started howling.
I had no idea what her name even was.
Felix, my wolf was going crazy in my head howling mate.
Before I had even known what was happening he had taken over and had grabbed onto her and laid a passionate kiss on her lips.
This woman tasted amazing. I felt like I would have melted standing there touching her. Her skin was so soft and smelled so good. Her eyes were even more captivating, one brown and the other looking to be a hazelish-green. I can’t believe I ran away from home and ended up finding my mate by coincidence.
I could tell she was a human. It's not unheard of for werewolves to mate with humans.
It just brought a little extra difficulty.
Getting humans to understand and feel the mate bond for instance. A human deciding to accept you was a big risk you would have to take if they were your mate.
Of course there is also the possibility that they could freak out and be absolutely terrified of you.
Humans live in a world of make believe.
A long time ago they just decided to live in fear, and hate. They stopped acknowledging our species even existed.
Most of them think that we are monsters made from nightmares and stories to scare children.
It’s rather insulting to us, but we decided to not entertain them either. The leaders of the human world know we exist. They will do what is necessary when it comes to us and keeping the public oblivious.
I stood back and looked at her after the kiss. Her eyes were very unique.
I wanted to say something else besides just growling “Mine!” In her ear.
I heard rustling through the bush and the sound of twigs snapping under foot.
I looked at her for another second. Then I quickly turned and waded away.
I needed more time with her, without other people interrupting.
I can’t control my wolf around her right now for long either.
As I climbed out the water and headed for the other side of the bush. I quickly looked back for one last look before disappearing into the trees. I ran for a few minutes then stopped.
Felix was driving me crazy.
“We have to go back!” Felix growled angrily in my head.
“We can’t go back, not right now. We have to come up with a plan. She’s not alone and she is a human. Not to mention you are trying to take control right now. We can’t scare her away. We just need to calm down.” I said to Felix in my head.
“Fine, but you better not lose her!” Felix growled.
“I won’t!” I yelled at him.
I looked down to see her hair tie that was wrapped around my fingers. I held it up to my nose and breathed in deeply.
I felt tingles of relief spread throughout my body.
I was calmed down for the moment by her scent alone.
I realized that I had underestimated how strong the mate bond is.
Having someone that can bring you peace by just the smell of something that they have worn was incredible.
I needed her.
I decided that I would follow them in wolf form back to wherever they lived. It would be dark soon, the sun was already setting. I would stay hidden in the tree’s until I had to change back into human form.
I quickly stripped the clothes I had on and stuffed them into my backpack and changed into wolf form. I would have to be careful not to be seen or heard.
I picked up my backpack with my teeth and headed back towards the stream. I could smell my mate's scent lingering in the air. I followed it back to the main trail and back down the mountain side.
This trail was only a few miles away from our territory but I thanked the goddess for the witches that we paid to give us a barrier of protection.
Nowadays a protection barrier was an absolute must if you had a large pack. If you could afford it and wanted to live separately from the humans in the forest with your pack.
Humans continue to develop land and cut down forests. So mythical beings came up with two solutions.
Option one was a barrier of protection that hid your location.
It would hide anyone’s scent who was within the barrier, and provide temporary protection from those who would try to attack the barrier.
Better yet humans couldn’t detect the barrier. Google maps would only show a cluster of trees together.
The second option was to integrate into the human’s society.
About two dozen packs had done this successfully.
An alpha would sell their land to another pack or rent it out to other mythical creatures. Then move their pack to a city or town. It was most often successful if you either picked a major city or a small town.
The crescent moon pack had been the most successful of the packs to do this so far. They were the fifth largest pack in the United States. They lived in New York City. Their pack bought one hotel and two apartment complexes. They started a pack business in various forms of security and surveillance and running the hotel.
The pack lived in the apartments and stayed to themselves amongst the humans.
So far these options seemed to be working out. I didn’t like the fact that it felt like this was the human world and we were just living in it. I also still didn’t know how I felt about having my mate be human. Humans were undeniably selfish and arrogant. It seemed to be in their DNA. I knew that there were ways to change my mate into a werewolf. She would have to be willing to do so. Then I wondered if my pack would even accept her. Having a human as luna would not be acceptable to all of them. There would be more than a few that would outright reject her.
Humans were considered to be weak and have dirty blood.
I had a challenge ahead of me. I needed to think carefully before making any decisions.
I came to the end of the trail and could hear voices coming from the clearing ahead.I went over to the trees on the side. I laid down so I couldn’t be seen. My wolf hearing could pick up that they were heading home and going to meet up later. I could see my mate in the passenger side of an old jeep wrangler.
Her eyes staring out the window into the tree’s as if she was looking for something.
“Maybe she is wishing that she could see us again.” Felix said cheerfully.
“Don’t get your hopes up loverboy.” I said to him, half hoping he was right.
Her eyes slowly closed then flickered back open. My mate was worn out I could tell. The Jeep started to drive down the road and I ran after them. I matched the car's speed while I ran next to them through the forest. The ride took about twenty minutes. The Jeep pulled into a nice two story house’s driveway. A few moments later my mate climbed out of the car.
“Hey do you need me to pick you up later when we go to the cafe?” The other girl's voice called out of the car.
“No thanks Trudy, I’ll have my Dad drive me over or I’ll ask him if I can take the car.” My mate said.
“ Alright see you later than Dawn.” The girl Trudy called out.
“So our mate’s name is Dawn.” I said.
Felix was pleased to learn her name. He kept humming her name in the back of my head.
“Okay let's go talk to Dawn now.”Felix said as he tried to take over and move my legs toward the house.
“Wait!” I yelled at him “ We can’t just walk up to her door! What we’re going to knock and say that we are the guy that she found in the stream back in the woods. We stalked her back to her house. She will freak out. She will think we are a psycho. The bond isn’t even made yet for her to trust us. You have to let me handle this Felix. I know you want to be with our mate, and so do I. Leave it to me, I’ve been working on a plan. Otherwise you are going to lose our mate for us.” I said to Felix.
“Okay,I will leave it to you Ace.If your plan doesn’t work, then we will do it my way.” Felix growled before retreating deep into my mind and putting his wall up to block me out.
Finally I could carry out my plan. I was going to find this cafe and get there before she did. I had already changed back into human form and put my clothes on. This shouldn’t be too hard. This town looked relatively small. I walked out of the tree’s and decided to head into the center of town. I’d probably find it there.
Dawn’s POV:
I walked into my house to find my Dad on the couch watching Football and drinking a beer.
“Hey there kiddo! How was the hiking trail?” my dad said, turning and looking over his shoulder at me.
“It was great,we all had fun.” I said
“That’s great, I made some spaghetti. It’s in the fridge, I wasn’t sure if you had eaten or not yet.” he said.
My dad was a pilot for an airline. It took him about an hour to drive to work. He usually wasn’t home a lot, but he had the next few days off. My dad had been trying to find things to keep his mind busy lately.
My mom had been killed by a drunk driver while visiting my Aunt in California two years ago. My Dad had been struggling ever since. His grief had him depressed for months. He barely came out of his room. My grandmother,on my moms side had to come stay with us for a little while to help my dad get through it.
I often worried about what he would do once I graduated in a few weeks and went off to college.
My dad was a very handsome guy. He was about six feet tall with brown eyes and slicked back brown hair, he was italian american. Yet he always claimed to be just italian. He had an infectious laugh that I hadn’t heard in a while.
He hadn’t even been out on a date since my mother died.
I know that most kids don't like the idea of their parents dating other people, but I just wanted him to be happy.
I glanced at the picture on the wall. It was my parents' favorite wedding picture. My mom’s beautiful brown skin glowed in a creamy white wedding dress with elbow length gloves. It showed her standing at the altar with my father. Them staring into each other's eyes.
I loved this picture more than any other photo I’ve ever seen. I wondered if it was holding my father back sometimes. A constant reminder whenever he walked through the door. I had asked him if we should take it down or move it to where we won’t have to always see it.It just caused him to become upset anytime I bothered mentioning it, and he would change the subject as if he never heard me to begin with. I eventually stopped asking, grandma couldn’t get him to take it down either when she was here.
“Hey Dad, I was wondering if I could use the car or if you could drop me off at the cafe.” I said.
“Sure, I could drive you or you could take the car if you wanted, it’s up to you kiddo.” He said.
“I think I will take the car. I’ll probably grab a bite to eat while I'm at the cafe. I’m going to go take a quick shower though.” I said as I headed for the stairs.
“Well okay kiddo, I’ll put a few bucks on the table here for you.” He said “Make sure your home by 10:30.”
“Yes Dad.” I said running up the stairs to the shower.
I walked into my room and shut the door. I decided to wear my high waisted jeans that had suspenders with a black crop top. It was one of the cutest outfits I had. It was comfortable yet it showed off my figure.
I stripped off my clothes and tossed them in my hamper. I would make sure to wash Trudy’s jacket and give it back to her tomorrow.
I went into my bath and cut the shower on. I set a timer on my phone for seven minutes. It was only about to be seven.I wanted to get to the cafe a little earlier than everyone else. I stepped into the shower and quickly finger combed my shampoo through my hair, and rinsed it out. I started washing with my lavender body wash when my mind started thinking about Alistar. I'm not going to lie. My mind often went to him while I was in the shower. I wished he was in the shower with me. My hand started to travel down to the throbbing between my legs. I tilted my head back as I started rubbing my finger against my c**t.
Then the man from the stream flashed into my mind. I was about to start finger fu**king myself when my alarm on my phone rang out and brought me back to reality. I quickly rinsed off in cold water and turned the water off and grabbed my towel.
I threw some leave-in conditioner in my hair and combed it through. I usually put my hair up in a messy bun, but I decided to leave it down. Remembering the guy from the lake taking it out. Even though I was mixed I didn’t really have Afro texture hair. My hair was right in the middle. My hair had curls, but it looked like finer texture. My hair was beautiful but I did wish it looked more like my moms. She had a beautiful Afro. She often kept it in twists that would frame her face. I wished she was still here to see me graduate.
I checked the time on my phone. It was ten minutes after seven. I quickly got dressed and ran down the stairs. I grabbed the money off the table along with the car keys and headed for the cafe.
