Back at the girls' hostel, Georgia couldn't shake the thoughts that flooded her mind. She kept replaying the moment she had hugged Karl, the memory of his warmth still lingering in her senses. It was as if his embrace had left an imprint on her very soul, something she couldn't understand or easily dismiss. She found herself grappling with emotions she had never anticipated.
"How can just a hug bring me so much comfort?" she whispered to herself, confusion lacing her words. She leaned against the wall, her heart racing as she recalled the softness of his chest against her cheek, the way his arms had wrapped around her like a protective shield. It didn't make sense. Karl was supposed to be the person she disliked the most, the one who made her life complicated. How had everything changed so drastically?
"But wait..." she murmured, her thoughts spiraling into chaos. "Was I the same person who hugged him? The person I hated the most? No... no, this can't be happening."
Her mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. She had always seen Karl as someone who was cold and unapproachable, but now... now, everything seemed different. The very idea that she had felt safe and comforted in his arms was something she couldn't reconcile with her previous feelings. And those words... oh, those words she had spoken. The memory of them made her cringe inwardly.
"Oh God," she groaned, burying her face in her hands, "did I really say those things? How am I going to face him now? And what if Horla asks me about what I said?"
The thought of facing Karl again, or even worse, explaining herself to Horla, filled her with dread. She could already imagine the teasing look in Horla's eyes, the questions that would follow. How could she explain something she didn't even understand herself?
As these thoughts consumed her, Horla returned from the washroom, calling out her name. "Georgia..."
Georgia snapped out of her reverie, her heart leaping into her throat. "Yes!" she replied a little too quickly, her voice betraying her unease.
Horla raised an eyebrow, noticing the tension in Georgia's voice. "What's going on? I thought I heard you talking to yourself..."
"Oh, it's nothing," Georgia said hastily, trying to sound casual. "Really, it's nothing."
Horla studied her for a moment longer, then shrugged. "Alright... if you say so."
The silence that followed was thick with unspoken questions, but Horla didn't press further. "It's already late. I'm off to bed. Don't forget to turn off the lights when you're done showering," she said, turning to leave.
Georgia nodded absently, her mind still racing as she made her way to the washroom. Just as she reached the door, Horla's voice rang out again.
"Em... Georgia, wait!" Horla called after her.
Georgia's heart skipped a beat. She froze in her tracks, her mind immediately jumping to the worst-case scenario. Was Horla about to ask her about Karl? Was she about to pry into the very thing Georgia was desperate to avoid? She turned around slowly, a forced smile plastered on her face.
"Yes? What is it?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"I just wanted to remind you... if you feel any discomfort, tell me, okay?" Horla said, her voice filled with genuine concern.
Relief washed over Georgia like a tidal wave. "Okay, I hear you," she replied, trying not to sound too eager to escape.
"Hurry and get some rest," Horla added with a gentle smile.
Georgia nodded again and quickly entered the washroom, closing the door behind her as if she were fleeing from something. Once inside, she placed a hand on her chest, feeling the rapid thud of her heartbeat beneath her palm. "Thank God..." she muttered under her breath. "I thought I was done for..."
The anxiety that had gripped her began to ebb away as the warm water cascaded over her in the shower. She let out a long sigh, trying to wash away the turmoil in her mind. But even as she tried to relax, the thoughts of Karl lingered, stubbornly refusing to leave her alone.
By the time she returned to bed, her mind was a little quieter, though the unease hadn't fully disappeared. She closed her eyes, hoping sleep would bring her some peace, but her dreams were filled with images of Karl—his concerned eyes, his comforting embrace, and the confusing emotions he stirred within her.
The next day, Georgia and Horla left their class earlier than usual. Georgia was determined to catch up on the lessons she had missed, and she hoped that burying herself in her studies would help her forget about the confusion in her heart. The two of them walked to their lockers to gather the materials they needed for the day.
"Are you done?" Horla asked, glancing over at Georgia.
"Coming!" Georgia called back, her voice a little breathless as she hurried to join Horla. They fell into step together, chatting and laughing as they made their way to class. For a brief moment, Georgia felt like everything was normal again, like she could forget about the previous day's events.
But as they approached their classroom, Horla suddenly fell silent. Georgia, still engrossed in their conversation, didn't notice at first. It wasn't until she realized that Horla wasn't responding that she stopped talking and looked up.
There, standing in front of their class, was Karl. His presence was like a bolt of electricity that shot through Georgia, making her heart skip a beat. She followed Horla's gaze, her own eyes locking onto Karl's. The world seemed to narrow down to just the two of them, everything else fading into the background.
Karl must have felt the intensity of their gaze, because he turned his head and met Georgia's eyes. In that instant, all the memories of the previous day came rushing back—the hug, the warmth, the confusing emotions. It was as if time had stopped, and they were both frozen in that moment, unable to look away.
Horla, sensing the tension between them, cleared her throat loudly, breaking the spell. "Well... I'm sorry for blocking you," Karl said, finally finding his voice. There was an awkwardness to his words, as if he were just as uncertain as Georgia.
"Can I talk to Georgia?" Karl asked, his tone softer now, almost pleading.
Georgia and Horla exchanged a glance. There was an unspoken understanding between them, and for a moment, Georgia feared that Horla would ask the very question she had been dreading.
"Are you asking permission from me?" Horla asked with a teasing smile, though there was a seriousness in her eyes.
"Yes... why? Is there a problem?" Karl responded, his voice a little too eager.
Horla shook her head. "Oh, no... no problem at all."
"Georgia, I'll see you later," Horla said, turning to her friend with a knowing look.
"Okay..." Georgia replied, her voice barely above a whisper. She watched as Horla walked away, leaving her alone with Karl.
They moved a bit away from the class, finding a quiet corner where they could talk. For a moment, an uncomfortable silence settled between them. Both of them seemed unsure of what to say, their usual confidence replaced by a shyness that was unfamiliar.
"I... I..." they both started speaking at the same time, then quickly fell into nervous laughter.
"You first," Georgia said, gesturing for Karl to speak.
Karl took a deep breath, his expression serious. "Okay... um... How are you doing today?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine concern.
"I'm alright," Georgia replied, her voice softer than usual. There was a vulnerability in her tone that she didn't quite know how to hide.
Karl hesitated for a moment before continuing. "I wanted to ask... can you forgive Mellisa on my behalf? Especially her friends... they didn't mean to cause you any harm."
Georgia shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips. "No, there's no need for that. I don't really blame them. In fact, I'm also to blame... I shouldn't have let things get out of hand."
There was a sincerity in her voice that caught Karl off guard. "Please... I'm sorry for everything," he said, his voice almost pleading.
Georgia looked up at him, surprised by the intensity of his apology. "Alright... no need to apologize," she said softly. "So... are we cool now?"
Karl nodded, relief washing over him. "Friends?" he asked, extending his hand toward her, his eyes searching hers for a response.
For a moment, Georgia hesitated, her mind flashing back to the confusing emotions she had been grappling with. But then she looked into Karl's eyes and saw the sincerity there, the kindness she had never noticed before. Slowly, she reached out and took his hand.
"Friends," she agreed, giving his hand a gentle shake.
They both stood there for a moment, neither of them quite sure what to say next. The tension that had been building between them seemed to dissolve in that simple handshake, replaced by something new—an understanding, a connection that neither of them could fully explain.
"I think I gotta go," Georgia said, finally breaking the silence.
"Okay... see you later," Karl replied, his voice warm and genuine.
"Bye..." Georgia said, turning to leave.
"Bye," Karl repeated, watching her as she walked away.
