The office was hushed once again, the kind of silence that only settled deep into the night when the world outside had already gone home. The fluorescent lights hummed faintly, casting pale glow across the glossy desks. Elena had been typing for hours, her back stiff and her eyes aching, but she didn’t dare complain. The pile of files on her desk felt like it multiplied with each passing evening.
She was startled when she realized Adrian was still there. Usually, CEOs disappeared long before midnight, retreating into their private worlds, but not Adrian. He lingered, pacing around his office, reviewing documents, occasionally stepping out as though to check something, only to find his gaze straying toward Elena’s temporary desk.
Elena caught his presence more than once, and each time, her stomach twisted with confusion. Why was he still here? And why did his eyes hold that unreadable weight every time they met hers?
Hours passed until the only sound was the faint ticking of the wall clock. Elena reached to gather the last set of papers. She picked up her cup of coffee to drink from it only to find it empty. She stood up to stretch her body as she felt her back getting stiff, only to bump her head lightly against something or rather someone. Adrian Blackwell was standing there all gracefully enjoying the site before him.
She looked up, startled, and froze. Adrian was right there, standing before her, his eyes softened by something she couldn’t quite name.
“You should rest,” he said quietly, his voice low and almost tender. “You’ve done enough for today.”
Her lips parted, but no words came out. She couldn’t even blink. For a moment, time itself seemed suspended. The way he looked at her was unlike anything she had expected from him, the powerful, intimidating Adrian whose approval no one dared seek.
“Sir, I.....” she began, but her voice betrayed her with a tremble.
Before she could finish, his hand brushed against hers as he passed a cup of coffee to her. The touch was electric, sending a shiver up her arm. Their eyes locked, and neither of them moved away. Slowly, deliberately, as though pulled by something stronger than reason, Adrian leaned closer.
Elena’s heartbeat hammered in her chest. She should move. She should pull away. But her body betrayed her, staying rooted to the spot as his gaze flickered from her eyes to her lips.
And then it happened soft at first, tentative, almost questioning. His lips brushed hers in the faintest of touches, but it was enough to shatter every wall she had built around herself. She gasped against him, her breath mingling with his, and before she could retreat, he deepened the kiss.
It was slow, forbidden, and devastatingly tender. Adrian wasn’t the cold CEO now, he was a man, vulnerable in that stolen moment, letting her see the part of him no one else did. His hand slid up to cradle the side of her face, and Elena felt her resolve crumble.
When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing unevenly. She stared at him, wide-eyed, her mind a blur of disbelief and emotions she couldn’t name.
“Adrian…” she whispered, but the name felt foreign on her tongue, too intimate.
He said nothing. He only looked at her, a storm in his eyes, before straightening and stepping back as if he had crossed a line he wasn’t supposed to. Without another word, he left her standing there, heart racing, lips still tingling from the kiss.
That night, Elena couldn’t sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, the memory replayed his touch, his warmth, the way the world had gone still. She hated how easily her thoughts betrayed her. This wasn’t supposed to happen. She was just a temp. He was her boss. A man whose life was galaxies apart from hers.
The next morning at work, her distraction showed. She mistyped emails, misplaced files, even spilled coffee on a report. Her colleagues whispered, wondering why the usually diligent Elena seemed so out of it. She avoided Adrian’s gaze as much as she could, but she could feel his distraction too. His instructions were curt, his meetings shorter, and yet, occasionally, she caught him watching her when he thought no one else noticed.
That evening, unable to bear the weight of it alone, Elena called Christine.
“You sound weird,” Christine teased the moment she picked up. Don’t tell me Mr. CEO finally gave you a promotion?
Elena hesitated. “Christine… something happened.”
Her friend gasped dramatically. “Don’t tell me he kissed you.”
Elena’s silence was all the confirmation Christine needed. “Elena!” she squealed. “Are you kidding me?” That man, that ice king, actually kissed you? I swear, this sounds like something straight out of a romance drama.
“Christine, stop. "It’s not funny,” Elena said, though her cheeks were already burning. “I can’t stop thinking about it.” I can’t focus, I keep messing up at work… and he looks distracted too. I don’t know what to do.
Christine laughed softly but then grew serious. “Elena, listen to me.” I know it feels like a fairytale right now, but be careful. You and I both know the truth, people like him don’t mix with people like us. The rich and poor don’t mingle, not in this world. And if they do, it always comes with a price.
Her words made Elena’s chest tighten. She knew Christine was right, and yet… the memory of his lips on hers refused to fade.
“Just… promise me you’ll be careful,” Christine said gently. “Don’t lose yourself in something that might hurt you.”
Elena whispered, “I promise,” though she wasn’t sure if she meant it. Because even as she said it, her heart longed for the very thing Christine warned her against.
And Adrian, she knew he was just as haunted by that kiss as she was.
