thirteen Sangmo waves from the courtyard with a smile that lightens up the dim and overcast end of the day. “See you found your little friend.” She ruffles my pony’s mane. “I bet it was quite a rascal in its younger years.” I manage a brittle laugh. “Yeah.” My voice wavers as I glance at the barn once more. Better not tell Sangmo or anybody else. They might think I’ve gone mad. “You good?” She frowns and slips a bridle on the pony. “You look like you’re about to run off, you little devil.” He neighs as if it knows she’s onto him. My hand glides over his neck. This little one still steals my heart. “I just met Uncle.” I clear my throat. “And I think something’s off.” My feet shuffle in the gravel and my mind sways. Maybe I should tell her? “Oh, for sure if he’s anything like his sons.
