Chapter 4: The DNA Test

Ryan Kingsley slid his phone into a drawer just as a knock sounded at his office door. "Come in." The door opened, and Sophia Harrington walked inside. Sophia carried herself with effortless confidence. Her fitted cream-colored dress looked like it belonged on a magazine cover, and her smile immediately brightened the room. "There you are," she said. "I've been waiting downstairs for ten minutes." Ryan stood and crossed the room to greet her. "My fault." Sophia kissed his cheek before studying his face. "You're distracted." Ryan loosened his tie slightly. "Am I?" "Yes." She folded her arms. "What's going on?" Ryan hesitated. Normally, he would have dismissed the entire situation without mentioning it. But for some reason, he couldn't. "A woman came to see me today." Sophia raised an eyebrow. "Should I be concerned?" Ryan almost smiled. "She claims I have a five-year-old son." Sophia laughed immediately. The sound echoed through the office. "Oh, is that all?" Ryan didn't join her. The laughter slowly faded. Sophia's smile weakened slightly. "Wait." She studied him carefully. "You're serious." Ryan nodded. For the first time, uncertainty flickered across Sophia's face. Only briefly. Then it disappeared. "Ryan, people make ridiculous claims against wealthy men all the time." "I know." "So ignore her." "I arranged a DNA test." Silence. A single second. Two. Then Sophia recovered. "That's probably smart." Her voice remained calm. Too calm. "If it proves she's lying, this will all disappear." Ryan nodded. "Exactly." But even as he said it, Noah's photograph flashed through his mind. The dark eyes. The familiar expression. Sophia stepped closer. "Don't waste your energy thinking about it." Ryan agreed. At least outwardly. Inside, he wasn't nearly as certain as he pretended to be. Emma arrived at the hospital exhausted. The meeting with Ryan had drained every ounce of energy she possessed. She kept replaying the conversation. His disbelief. His suspicion. The cold way he'd looked at her. Part of her understood it. Another part wanted to scream. She had spent five years raising Noah alone. The last thing she wanted was Ryan's money. She only wanted her son to survive. As she entered Noah's room, she found him chatting with a nurse. The boy was sitting upright in bed, animatedly describing a dinosaur documentary. The nurse laughed. "And then what happened?" "The T-Rex probably ate everybody." The nurse nodded solemnly. "That seems likely." Noah spotted Emma and immediately grinned. "Mom!" The nurse excused herself. Emma sat beside the bed. "How are you feeling?" "Good." Then Noah narrowed his eyes. Exactly like he always did when he suspected something. "You found him." Emma froze. "What?" "My dad." Noah looked entirely too pleased with himself. "You found him." Emma sighed. Apparently there was no hiding anything from her son. "Yes." His eyes widened. "You did?" "Yes." "What does he look like?" The questions came instantly. "Is he tall?" "Yes." "Does he have a beard?" "No." "Does he know about me?" Emma hesitated. "Now he does." Noah looked thoughtful. "Was he nice?" That question was harder. Emma chose her words carefully. "I don't really know him." "You met him though." "Yes." "Did he seem nice?" Emma smiled weakly. "He seemed surprised." That earned a laugh. "I'd be surprised too." Emma brushed his hair back. Noah became serious again. "Will he help?" The question lingered between them. Before Emma could answer, Noah suddenly swayed. The smile disappeared from his face. His skin turned pale. "Mom..." Emma immediately sat forward. "Noah?" His hand trembled. Then his eyes rolled slightly. The panic returned instantly. "Nurse!" Emma jumped from her chair. Medical staff rushed into the room. Monitors beeped. Voices filled the air. Someone guided Emma backward while doctors worked around Noah's bed. Every second felt endless. Emma stood frozen. Watching. Waiting. Praying. Finally, after what felt like hours but was only minutes, the tension eased. Noah stabilized. The doctors stepped back. Relief hit Emma so hard her knees nearly gave out. Dr. Peterson approached her. "We've got him stable." Emma wiped her eyes. "Is he okay?" "For now." The answer wasn't comforting. And they both knew it. Time was running out. That evening, Ryan stood alone in his penthouse overlooking the city. The skyline glittered below. Normally, views like this helped him clear his mind. Tonight, they didn't. His attention remained fixed on a photograph. Noah. He enlarged the image again. The boy's smile looked familiar. Not identical. Not obvious. But familiar. Ryan zoomed in. The eyes. The shape of the eyebrows. The stubborn expression. He rubbed his jaw. This was ridiculous. A photograph proved nothing. Yet he couldn't stop looking. Finally, he grabbed his phone. "Claire." His assistant answered immediately. "Yes, Mr. Kingsley?" "The DNA test." "It's scheduled for tomorrow morning." Ryan stared at Noah's picture. "Good." After ending the call, he looked at the image one final time. Then he set the phone down. Sleep didn't come easily that night. The next morning, Emma arrived early at the medical facility. Noah held a small dinosaur toy while swinging his legs from his chair. "Do they have snacks here?" Emma laughed. "That's your biggest concern?" "I'm hungry." "Of course you are." A few minutes later, the waiting room became noticeably quieter. Emma looked up. Ryan had arrived. His presence drew attention instantly. Not because he demanded it. Because people noticed him naturally. Ryan's gaze landed on Noah. For a brief moment, everything else disappeared. This was the first time he had seen the child in person. Not in a photograph. Not on a screen. Real. Alive. Looking directly at him. Ryan expected disappointment. Expected to feel nothing. Instead, he found himself staring. The resemblance wasn't overwhelming. But it existed. Enough to make him uncomfortable. Enough to make him look twice. Noah smiled politely. "Hi." Ryan blinked. "Hello." The boy stood. "I'm Noah." Ryan shook the small hand offered to him. Something about the interaction felt unexpectedly natural. "I'm Ryan." Noah tilted his head. "I know." Emma nearly groaned. Ryan actually looked amused. For the first time since she'd met him again. The medical staff soon called them inside. The procedure itself was simple. Samples were collected. Forms were signed. Everything moved quickly. Before long, it was over. As they prepared to leave, Noah's dinosaur slipped from his hand and fell to the floor. Ryan instinctively bent down. He picked it up. "Here." Noah accepted it with a grin. "Thanks." "You're welcome." The exchange lasted only seconds. But Emma noticed it. Something softened in her chest. Not because Ryan had accepted Noah. He hadn't. But because the interaction felt genuine. Unforced. Natural. For a tiny moment, they looked exactly what they might be. Father and son. Then reality returned. They began heading toward the exit. Suddenly Noah stopped. He turned around. "Wait." Emma immediately sensed danger. "Noah—" The boy looked directly at Ryan. Completely innocent. Completely unaware. "Mom says you're my dad." Silence. The room froze. Emma stopped breathing. Ryan stared at Noah. Noah simply waited. As though asking whether the sky was blue. Or whether dinosaurs were extinct. Ryan opened his mouth. No words came. For the first time in years, Ryan Kingsley seemed genuinely speechless. Then his phone rang. The sharp sound shattered the silence. Ryan glanced at the screen. His expression changed instantly. The call was from the laboratory. Emma's pulse jumped. The laboratory. The DNA results. Impossible. It was too soon. Yet somehow they were ready. Ryan slowly answered. Neither he nor Emma looked away from each other. "Mr. Kingsley," a voice said from the other end. "The results have been processed." Ryan's grip tightened on the phone. Emma held her breath. And Noah looked between them, completely unaware that the next few words could change all of their lives forever.
