The Unexpected Visitor

The morning sun streamed through the windows of George's Chicago apartment. George sat at the kitchen table, drinking coffee and reading the newspaper. The headlines were quiet again. No more scandals. No more threats. No more secrets uncovered. Life was finally settling into a rhythm. The foundation was growing. His family was healing. The nightmares were becoming less frequent. Sam walked into the kitchen. She was dressed for work, her hair pulled back in a neat ponytail. She looked peaceful. Happy. "Good morning," George said. "Good morning." She kissed him on the cheek. "Did you sleep well?" "Better than I have in weeks." "Good. That's good." She poured herself a cup of coffee and sat down across from him. "What's on your mind today?" "Nothing. For the first time in a long time, nothing." Sam smiled. "That's wonderful." --- The day was quiet. George went to work. He had meetings with clients. He reviewed financial documents. He did his job. At noon, he got a call from Arthur. "George. How are you?" "I'm good. Really good. How about you?" "I'm great. Sarah and the baby are doing wonderful. I wanted to invite you to dinner this weekend." "I'd love that. I'll bring Sam and the kids." "Perfect. I'll see you then." They talked for a few more minutes. Then George hung up. He looked at Sam. "We're going to Arthur's for dinner this weekend." Sam smiled. "That sounds wonderful." --- The weekend came quickly. George, Sam, and the kids drove to Rhode Island. The mansion was different now. It was a museum, but Arthur and Sarah lived in a separate wing. The house was warm and welcoming. Arthur greeted them at the door. He was smiling. Happy. "George! Sam! Come in, come in." They walked inside. The house was filled with laughter. Sarah was in the kitchen, cooking. The baby was in the living room, playing with toys. George sat down with Arthur. They talked about the foundation. About the museum. About the future. "I'm proud of us," Arthur said. "We've come a long way." "We have." George nodded. "It wasn't easy. But we made it." "Yes, we did." --- The dinner was wonderful. Sarah had prepared a feast. The food was delicious. The conversation was warm. The children played together. After dinner, George and Arthur sat on the porch. The sun was setting. The sky was orange and pink. "What's next?" Arthur asked. George was quiet for a moment. "I don't know. I think I want to enjoy the peace for a while." "That sounds like a good plan." They sat in silence, watching the sunset. --- The drive back to Chicago was quiet. Sam was asleep in the passenger seat. The kids were asleep in the back. George drove in silence, thinking about everything. His family was healing. The foundation was growing. Life was finally good. He smiled. --- The next morning, George woke up to a strange sound. It was a knock on the door. It was early. Too early for visitors. George got out of bed and walked to the door. He opened it. A man was standing on his doorstep. He was tall, thin, and dressed in a black suit. His face was pale and lined. His eyes were dark and intense. "George Blackwood?" the man asked. "Yes?" "My name is William Cade. I'm Thomas Cade's son." George's heart stopped. "Thomas Cade's son?" "Yes. I need to talk to you." George was quiet for a moment. Then he stepped aside. "Come in." --- William Cade walked into the apartment. He looked around. He seemed nervous. His hands were shaking. "Thank you for seeing me," William said. "I know this is strange. I know I'm the last person you expected to see." George sat down across from him. "What do you want?" William took a breath. "I want to apologize. For everything my father did. For everything he put your family through." George stared at him. "You're apologizing for your father?" "Yes. I know it doesn't change what happened. But I want you to know that I'm sorry. I want you to know that not all Cades are like him." George was quiet for a long moment. "Why are you here? Really?" William leaned forward. "Because I need your help." "My help? Why would I help you?" "Because my father is going to be released from prison. He's been working on an appeal. And he's going to get out." George's blood ran cold. "That's not possible. He was sentenced to life." "He was sentenced to life. But he has connections. Powerful connections. And he's been working on getting out for years." George felt sick. "When?" "Next month. He's going to be released next month." George stood up. "I need to think. I need to process this." William stood up too. "I understand. But I want to help. I want to stop him. I want to make sure he doesn't hurt anyone else." "Then why come to me?" "Because you're the only one who can stop him. You know everything about him. You have evidence. You have connections." George was quiet for a moment. "I'll think about it." William nodded. "Thank you. I'll be in touch." He left. --- George sat down heavily. Thomas Cade was getting out. The man who'd tried to destroy his family. The man who'd threatened his mother. The man who'd kidnapped his father. George called Arthur. "Arthur. We have a problem." "What kind of problem?" "Thomas Cade is getting out of prison. He's been working on an appeal. He's going to be released next month." Arthur was quiet for a moment. "That's not possible." "It is. His son just came to see me. He told me everything." "His son? William Cade?" "Yes. He wants to help. He wants to stop his father." Arthur was quiet again. "What do we do?" "I don't know. But we need to figure it out." --- George called Sam. "Sam. I need to talk to you." "What's wrong?" "Thomas Cade is getting out of prison. Next month." Sam was quiet for a moment. "That's impossible." "I know. But it's true. His son just came to see me. He told me everything." Sam was quiet again. "What are we going to do?" "I don't know. But we need to figure it out." --- The next few days were tense. George couldn't stop thinking about Thomas Cade. The man who'd tried to destroy his family. The man who'd threatened his mother. The man who'd kidnapped his father. He called Jonathan Sterling. "Mr. Sterling. Thomas Cade is getting out of prison." Sterling was quiet for a moment. "I heard. I've been following the case." "How can we stop it?" "I don't know if we can. He has powerful connections. People who owe him favors. People who want to see him free." "Then what do we do?" "We prepare. We gather evidence. We make sure that if he gets out, he doesn't get away with anything else." George was quiet for a moment. "Okay. Let's do it." --- The weeks passed quickly. George worked with Sterling to gather evidence. They talked to witnesses. They found documents. They built a case. William Cade helped them. He provided information about his father's plans. He gave them access to his father's files. George was grateful. He didn't trust William completely. But he needed the help. --- The day came. Thomas Cade was released from prison. George watched the news coverage. Cade walked out of the prison gates. He looked old. Broken. But his eyes were still sharp. Still dangerous. George felt a chill run down his spine. Cade was free. And he was coming for them. --- George called Arthur. "Arthur. Cade is out." "I know. I saw it on the news." "What do we do?" "We stay vigilant. We protect our families. We make sure he doesn't get near us." George nodded. "I agree." --- The days passed slowly. George couldn't sleep. He couldn't eat. He was constantly on edge. Sam tried to reassure him. But he couldn't be reassured. Every time the phone rang, his heart pounded. Every time a car drove past his house, he held his breath. He was terrified. --- The phone rang at 2:17 AM. George reached for it. His hands were shaking. It was Arthur. "George. Something's happened." "What?" "Someone broke into the mansion. They stole some files. Old files. From Dad's study." George's blood ran cold. "Cade?" "I don't know. But it's connected. I know it is." George was quiet for a moment. "What files?" "I don't know. The police are still investigating. But I think Cade is behind it." George felt sick. "I'll be there tomorrow." --- George drove to Rhode Island the next day. The mansion was surrounded by police tape. Officers were everywhere. Arthur was standing in the driveway, looking pale. "Arthur. What happened?" "Someone broke in last night. They went straight to Dad's study. They took some files from the safe." "The safe? Dad had a safe in his study?" "Yes. Hidden behind a painting. I found it after he died." George was quiet for a moment. "What was in the safe?" "I don't know. I never opened it. I was waiting for the right time." George walked to the study. The painting was on the floor. The safe was open. Empty. "Whoever did this knew exactly where to look," George said. "Thomas Cade?" "Or someone working for him." George looked at Arthur. "We need to find out what was in that safe. We need to know what Cade has on us." Arthur nodded. "I'll start investigating." --- The days passed. George worked with Arthur to find out what was in the safe. They talked to old employees. They searched through old records. They found nothing. But George couldn't shake the feeling that Cade had something on them. Something dangerous. He called William Cade. "William. It's George." "George. I was wondering when you'd call." "I need to know what your father took from the mansion." William was quiet for a moment. "I don't know. But I can find out." "Please. I need to know." William was quiet again. "I'll do what I can." --- The next day, William called. "George. I found out what my father took." "What was it?" "Documents. About your father. About his business. About his connections. He has everything. Evidence of crimes. Evidence of lies. Everything." George felt sick. "What is he going to do with them?" "I don't know. But I know he's planning something big. Something that will destroy your family." George was quiet for a long moment. "Thank you, William. I'll be ready." --- George called Arthur. "Arthur. I know what Cade took from the safe. He has documents. Evidence. Everything Dad ever did." Arthur was quiet for a moment. "What are we going to do?" "We're going to stop him. Before he can use them." "How?" George thought about it. "I have an idea. But I need your help."
