Chapter 11“Are you telling me,” Kailey said into the phone, “that you have been in the city for over two weeks, and you have not seen me?” Lucien let out a low sigh. His cousin, Kailey, was easily his biggest fan. Even when the band was playing in shitty bars on the lower east side of Manhattan—or worse, to a crowd of only two or three people in the Midwest—Kailey was always there. She came with them one summer as their merch girl and made it so that there was always at least one person in the audience who loved them and cheered them on. When the band made it big—or at least, bigger than shitty clubs—Kailey had come for a couple more tours, but eventually let the band’s bigger record company hire a real person to take over her role.
