Ethan sat on the edge of Lila’s bed, elbows resting on his knees and hands clasped tightly together. The room was quiet except for the low hum of the air conditioner. He had come straight to her apartment after leaving his mother’s house, and the moment he walked through the door, Lila could tell something was wrong.
She sat beside him now, one hand resting gently on his back as he spoke.
