DARIAN I don’t even look up when I hear the knock at my office door. “Come in,” I say, already knowing who it is. Only one wolf in this pack knocks like he owns the building. Theron steps in, dressed in one of those elaborate ceremonial robes he favors, even though there’s no occasion. He closes the door with a little too much care, like he wants to trap whatever conversation we’re about to have within these four walls. I lean back in my chair and set the report I’m reviewing aside. “To what do I owe the pleasure, Elder?” Theron smiles, but it doesn’t touch his eyes. “I thought I’d check in on our Alpha. See how the weight of responsibility is treating him.” We both know that was a lie, but I wasn’t about to call him out on it. “Everything is fine,” I say, keeping my voice neutral.
