Bloodlines And Access

EVELYN POV The knock came again. Harder. More final. “Blackthorn System Enforcement. Open the door immediately.” Sandra moved before I did. Her hand pressed lightly against my shoulder. Not comforting. Controlling. “Don’t speak unless necessary,” she said quietly. My chest tightened. “Why are they here?” I whispered. Sandra didn’t answer. She just reached for the door. Then stopped. Because a second voice came from outside. Not the same. Lower. Calmer. “This is unnecessary escalation.” That voice made Sandra freeze. Not fear. Recognition. She whispered something under her breath. “… Vale authority line?” My heart skipped slightly at the name. Lucien. But that wasn’t Lucien. The door unlocked itself. Not opened. Unlocked. Like authority had bypassed physical structure. It opened slowly. Two men stood outside. Uniformed. Not school staff. Not students. Their presence felt… external. Like they didn’t belong inside campus logic. And behind them— Lucien Vale. But he wasn’t alone. A man stood beside him. Older. Sharp suit. Controlled expression. The air around him felt heavier without explanation. Sandra immediately straightened. I noticed that. People don’t straighten like that for students. The man’s eyes moved first to Sandra. Then to me. Like he was reading classification tags directly off reality. Lucien stepped slightly forward. His voice was calm. “Containment review is not authorized in residential dorm zones without council override.” One of the enforcement men hesitated. Sandra spoke carefully. “This subject triggered a correction response yesterday.” The older man finally spoke. His voice wasn’t loud. But it filled the room anyway. “I am aware.” Silence. My stomach tightened. Sandra looked confused for the first time. “Then why are you—” The man raised a hand slightly. And she stopped speaking immediately. Not forcefully. Not magically. Just… institutionally. Like she had been reminded of hierarchy. Lucien looked at me briefly. Just once. Then back to the man. “She is not ready for external classification exposure,” Lucien said. The man studied him for a long moment. Then spoke. “You are involved beyond permitted proximity levels.” Lucien didn’t deny it. That silence mattered more than words. The man turned his gaze to me again. And this time— I felt it. Not observation. Assignment. Like I was being placed inside a category I didn’t agree to exist in. “Evelyn Carter,” he said calmly. I stiffened slightly at hearing my full name like that. “Scholarship entry,” he continued. “Unregistered lineage disruption.” My breath caught. Sandra looked at me sharply. “Unregistered what?” she whispered. But no one answered her. The man stepped slightly forward. And Lucien moved instantly—blocking just enough space without aggression. The older man paused. Then smiled slightly. Not warm. Not kind. Analytical. “You didn’t tell her,” he said to Lucien. Silence. That line hit differently. Because it wasn’t a question. It was confirmation of hidden knowledge. I stepped back slightly. “What is he talking about?” I asked quietly. Lucien didn’t look at me yet. The older man answered instead. “Evelyn Carter,” he said, “Is not an independent entry.” My throat tightened. Sandra’s eyes widened slightly. That reaction told me everything. She didn’t know that part either. The man continued calmly. “She is a secondary placement vector.” Silence dropped instantly. Lucien finally spoke. “Stop.” But the man ignored him. He looked at me properly. And said: “Your academic placement was authorized through Vale-family observation approval.” My body went cold. Vale. That name again. I turned slowly toward Lucien. “…What?” He didn’t answer immediately. That was enough. Sandra stepped forward slightly. “This isn’t in her file,” she said quickly. The man nodded. “Of course it isn’t.” A pause. “Files are not designed for subjects.” My breathing became uneven. Subjects again. Always that word. Lucien finally spoke. Calm but sharper now. “Remove her from immediate classification exposure.” The man tilted his head slightly. “You are requesting protective interference?” Lucien didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” Silence. Sandra looked between both of them now. Completely losing control of understanding. The man studied Lucien for a long moment. Then said something that shifted the entire room. “Your father will not approve this deviation.” Lucien didn’t react outwardly. But I saw it. A fraction of tension in his jaw. My stomach dropped. Father. So it was real. His family wasn’t just reputation. It was authority. Power layer above campus. The man looked at me again. And for the first time— I felt small in a way I couldn’t explain. Not emotionally. Structurally. Like I was being measured against something I couldn’t see. “You were never meant to be visible this early,” he said quietly. Sandra whispered behind me. “This is worse than I thought…” I looked at her. “You knew I had something to do with his family?” She hesitated. Just enough. Then: “I knew you were flagged under Vale observation lineage.” My throat tightened. “So I’m… connected to him?” Lucien finally spoke. “No.” That was immediate. Too immediate. He stepped closer to me slightly. And said quietly: “You’re connected to what my family studies.” Silence. That landed wrong. Very wrong. I whispered: “… What does your family study?” Lucien looked at me properly. And for the first time since I met him— His answer wasn’t vague. It was dangerous. “People who should not be able to disrupt prediction systems.” A pause. “You are one of them.” The man at the door finally spoke again. “The protocol is clear.” Sandra stiffened. Lucien didn’t move. I felt my breath stop. “What protocol?” I asked quietly. The man looked at me. And answered simply: “Transfer.” Silence. Sandra whispered: “No…” Lucien’s voice cut in immediately. “She is not leaving campus.” The man turned slightly toward him. “That is not your decision.” Lucien met his gaze. And said something that made the entire room change temperature. “It is now.”
