Chapter 8: The Shadow of Malakai

728 Words
Valerie didn't waste a single heartbeat. With a fierce battle cry, she lunged at the pale-faced man, her silver dagger slicing through the damp air. The man laughed, a chilling and hollow sound, as he sidestepped her attack with unnatural, fluid speed. He caught Valerie’s wrist mid-air, twisting it until she gasped in pain, and threw her hard against the brick wall of the tunnel. "Valerie!" Ayla screamed, her voice echoing frantically in the confined space. Valerie slumped to the ground, groaning as she tried to force herself back up, but the impact had dazed her. The man turned his bloodshot red eyes back to Ayla. He took a slow, mocking step toward her, his long nails extending into sharp, black claws. "Now, little human," he hissed, his gaze fixated entirely on her right hand. "Hand over the key. If you give it to me willingly, I might kill you quickly. Malakai doesn't like his targets to suffer too much... unless they fight back." Ayla’s heart was beating so hard she could feel it in her throat. She looked at Valerie, who was struggling to stand, and then back at the monster in front of her. She was terrified, but a sudden spark of anger flared inside her. Her grandfather had hidden this key to protect people. Ethan had bled to defend it. She wasn't going to just hand it over to a monster. "Never," Ayla whispered, her voice surprisingly firm. She backed away slowly, her eyes searching the dark ground for anything she could use as a weapon. The man’s smile vanished, replaced by a look of pure malice. "Silly girl," he snarled, crouching low, ready to spring at her. But before he could leave the ground, a massive, terrifyingly loud growl ripped through the tunnel from the stairs behind them. The sheer power of the sound made the dust fall from the ceiling. The pale man froze, his red eyes widening in sudden horror. "No... it can't be," he muttered, turning his head toward the darkness. A giant shadow burst into the dim light of the flashlight. It was Ethan, but he wasn't completely human anymore. He hadn't fully transformed into a wolf, but his body was larger, his shoulders broader, and thick silver-gray fur covered his arms. His face was a mask of pure, primal rage, and his golden eyes glowed like two burning suns in the dark tunnel. His deep chest wounds were still bleeding, but he looked completely unstoppable. With a roar that shook the entire underground passage, Ethan slammed into the pale man like a freight train. The force of the tackle carried them both ten feet down the tunnel, crashing into the stone floor. Ethan didn't give the Rogue a single chance to defend himself. He pinned the man down, his massive claws ripping through the man’s tattered coat. "You dare touch what belongs to me?" Ethan’s voice was no longer human; it was a terrifying, dual-toned rumble that vibrated through Ayla’s very bones. The pale man gasped for air, his claws scratching uselessly against Ethan’s thick fur. "Malakai... Malakai already has the map!" he choked out, coughing up dark blood. "The key won't save you, Alpha! The Crescent Moon Pack will fall!" Ethan didn't let him finish. With a final, powerful strike, he knocked the Rogue unconscious, his body going completely limp on the cold ground. Ethan stood up slowly, his heavy breaths echoing loudly in the silence of the tunnel. He turned around to face Ayla, his golden eyes still burning with primitive fury. For a second, Ayla felt a rush of fear. He looked so wild, so dangerous. But as Ethan took a slow step toward her, his golden eyes suddenly softened, shifting back into their familiar, deep gray color. The fur on his arms began to recede. He stumbled forward, his strength finally failing him after the brutal fight. Ayla didn't think twice. She ran forward and caught him just as his knees gave out, wrapping her arms around his massive shoulders to support his weight. Ethan leaned heavily against her, his head resting near her neck. "You're a very stubborn human," Ethan murmured weakly, his warm breath tickling her skin. "And you're a very reckless Alpha," Ayla replied, tears of relief finally slipping down her cheeks as Valerie finally managed to limp over to join them.
