With Valerie limping but recovering and Ethan leaning heavily on Ayla, the trio slowly made their way through the remainder of the dark, damp tunnel. Every step felt like a mile, but the fear of Malakai’s next move kept their legs moving. Finally, they reached the end of the passage, pushing open a heavy iron grate that led into an old, rusted warehouse near the city’s abandoned train tracks.
The cold morning air rushed over them, washing away the smell of the underground tunnels. Valerie found a small first-aid kit hidden inside the warehouse and immediately began reapplying fresh bandages to Ethan’s chest.
Ethan sat on an overturned wooden crate, his face pale from blood loss, but his eyes were sharp and focused. He looked at Ayla, who was staring out a broken window, watching the sunrise over the city skyline.
"Ayla," Ethan called out, his deep voice carrying a rare tone of vulnerability.
Ayla turned around, her fingers instinctively tracing the shape of the silver key inside her pocket. "Yes, Ethan?"
"What that Rogue said before he died... about the map," Ethan sighed heavily, rubbing his temples. "It means Malakai has finally found the second piece of the puzzle. The Ancestral Vault cannot be unlocked by the key alone. It requires a map that shows its shifting location. The vault moves with the lunar cycle."
Valerie dropped the medical tape she was holding, her face turning completely white. "Alpha... if Malakai has the map, then all he needs now is Ayla. He knows she has the key."
"He doesn't just want the key, Valerie," Ethan corrected grimly, his gray eyes locking onto Ayla with an intense, protective gaze. "He wants her. The key is bound to the bloodline of the protector. My ancestors gave your grandfather the duty to hide it because only a human with a pure heart can hold the key without being consumed by its ancient magic. If Malakai forces a human to turn the key, the magic will unleash a curse."
Ayla felt a cold dread settle deep in her stomach. "So, I am not just a bystander anymore. I am the only one who can actually use it?"
"Yes," Ethan said, standing up slowly, his massive frame steadying itself despite the pain. He walked over to her, stopping just inches away. He reached out, his large, warm hand covering hers over her jacket pocket. "Which means from this moment on, you do not leave my side. Your safety is my pack's highest priority. I won't let him touch you, Ayla. I swear it on my life."
The intensity in his eyes made Ayla’s breath catch in her throat. Amidst all the horror of monsters and hidden vaults, the strange, magnetic pull she felt toward this dangerous Alpha was growing stronger by the minute.
Before anyone could say another word, Valerie’s phone buzzed violently in her pocket. She pulled it out, read a text message, and looked up at Ethan with absolute terror in her eyes.
"Alpha... it’s from the pack house," Valerie whispered, her voice trembling. "Malakai’s army isn't just hunting us in the city. They have just launched a full-scale attack on our main territory. The pack borders have been breached."
