Chapter 15 The Last Survivor
Elise drifted in the void. The Odyssey was goneobliterated in a burst of white-hot fire, taking the infection with it. Or at least, that's what she hoped.
But the whisper in her comms still echoed in her head.
"You think fire can stop us?
Her hands trembled as she checked the pods' navigation system. The explosion had thrown her off course. The nearest relay station was days awayand she was running out of air.
She had survived the horrors aboard the Cassiopeia. She had escaped the nightmare that consumed the Odyssey.
But now, she was alone.
Drifting.
Waiting.
The Signal
Elise closed her eyes. The weight of exhaustion pressed down on her. She had fought so hardlost so much.
But thena ping.
Her eyes snapped open.
The pods distress beacon had locked onto something. A signal. A ship.
She activated the comms. This is Commander Elise Carter of the Odyssey. Is anyone receiving?"
Silence.
Thenstatic.
And finallya voice.
"Commander Carter we hear you.
Relief flooded through her. "I need immediate extraction. My ship" She swallowed hard. Was compromised. I have vital intel on an unknown biological threat."
There was a pause.
And thensomething that made her blood run cold.
"Yes, Commander. We know.
The voice was too calm. Too familiar.
Elises stomach twisted. Who am I speaking to?"
The line crackled.
"We've been waiting for you."
The nav screen flickeredand a name appeared.
Not a rescue vessel.
Not a friendly ship.
But a name she had seen before.
A name that should have been destroyed.
ISV Cassiopeia.
Her breath caught in her throat.
The Cassiopeia was gone.
Burned. Lost.
Then how was it here?
Her hands shook as the pods engines automatically engagedpulling her toward the signal.
"You brought us with you.
The whisper crawled through her mind.
Elise screamed.
Outside the viewport, the shape of the Cassiopeia loomeddark, waiting.
And as her pod was drawn into its airlock, the last thing she saw
Was the eyes staring back.
