Chapter 3: The Unexpected Rival

609 Words
The morning sun hit Hana's small room as she hurried to get ready for school. Yesterday's notes still made her uneasy, but she forced herself to stay calm. She wasn't sure who was trying to scare her, but she couldn't let fear control her. At the school gates, Jisoo was waiting. He smiled when he saw her. "Hey, Hana. Ready for another day?" Hana nodded. "I think so, Let's just get through today." As they entered the school, Minjun appeared again leaning against the wall near the entrance. He didn't speak this time just watched her and Hana felt her cheeks warm. She tried to ignore him, but his gaze was hard to forget. During lunch, Hana sat with Jisoo in their usual corner. They had barely taken their first bite when a loud voice called out. "Look who's here! The new girl with no sense of style." A girl Hana hadn't noticed before was pointing at her uniform laughing, Hana's stomach dropped. The girl's friends joined in whispering and smirking. Jisoo stood immediately. "Leave her alone!" The girls rolled their eyes "Why so protective? Are you her boyfriend?" one sneered. Hana stepped back. "I don't need anyone defending me," she said quietly, trying to keep her voice steady. Minjun appeared behind the girls, leaning casually against a table. "Enough," he said, his tone calm but commanding. "Back off or you'll regret it." The girls stared at him for a moment, then muttered and left. Hana felt relief mixed with confusion. Minjun had intervened, but it wasn't like he usually did anything for anyone. After classes, Hana went to the library to avoid the chaos of the hallways. She was trying to focus on her literature assignment when she noticed another folded note sticking out from between the pages of a book she was using. Hands shaking, she opened it. "Trust no one completely. They may not be what they seem." Hana's heart pounded, Another warning. Was it Minjun? Jisoo? Or someone else entirely? Jisoo found her sitting alone and read the note over her shoulder. "This is serious, Hana, Someone is watching you closely. I'll make sure nothing happens to you." Hana felt a little safer with him there, but the tension in her chest didn't fade. Later that afternoon, Hana ran into Minjun in the hallway. "You're avoiding me," he said, smirking. "I… I'm just busy," she replied, trying to keep her tone even. Minjun leaned closer. "You can't avoid everyone forever. And besides…" His eyes softened slightly. "I like that you don't seem impressed by me. Most girls here are already intimidated." Hana blinked. "I'm not here to impress anyone." "Good," he said. "Keep it that way. I want to see how far you can go on your own." She felt a strange mix of pride and irritation. She wasn't sure if she liked him or if he was just messing with her. Hana and Jisoo walked home together. The streets were crowded, but Hana barely noticed the people around her. "Do you think Minjun is… different?" Hana asked quietly. Jisoo glanced at her. "He is. But I don't trust him completely, Just be careful. And about the notes stay close to me." Hana nodded. She wanted to believe him, but the uncertainty lingered. She wasn't sure who to trust, and the tension between Minjun and Jisoo made it harder to think clearly. That night, Hana stared at the ceiling, wondering what tomorrow would bring. School had become more than classes and homework it was a place of secrets, challenges, and feelings she didn't understand yet. And the shadows around her were only beginning to grow.
