Episode 4: Close Encounter

1227 Words
The morning air was crisp as Hana walked to school, her mind replaying the events of the last few days. The notes, the teasing, and Minjun’s sudden moments of attention it was overwhelming. She didn’t know whether to feel safe or wary. Jisoo was already waiting at the usual corner. He waved, smiling. “Good morning, Hana,” he said softly. “Did you sleep well?” “Mostly,” Hana replied, adjusting her bag. “I’m just… tired.” Jisoo frowned, his protective instincts flaring again. “You’ve been staying up too late. Don’t overdo it, Hana.” She nodded, but before she could say anything else, a familiar voice interrupted. “Morning, new girl.” Minjun leaned casually against the school gate, his blazer slung over one shoulder, eyes fixed on her. Hana’s heart skipped a beat, and she quickly looked away. She hated that he could unsettle her so easily. “You’re early today,” he said, smirking. “Trying to avoid me?” Hana felt heat rise to her cheeks. “No. I just… like being on time” she said quietly, forcing herself to keep her tone steady. “Hmm. Good answer,” he murmured his gaze softening for a moment before he turned and walked away. Hana spent the morning trying to focus in class, but her thoughts kept drifting to Minjun. By the time literature club started her heart was pounding. She had been paired with Minjun for a short reading exercise and she didn’t know whether to be nervous or annoyed. “Let’s start,” the club leader said, setting down a thick book of poems. Minjun leaned toward her, lowering his voice. “I hope you’re ready to impress me.” Hana rolled her eyes. “I’m not here to impress anyone.” “Good,” he said, his smile soft. “I like that about you.” She looked up startled, There was something different in his tone gentle, almost sincere. Hana felt her chest tighten and for a moment the room seemed to shrink around them. As they read lines from the poem, Minjun’s hand brushed against hers, Hana froze. She could feel the warmth of his skin, the closeness sending shivers down her spine. Minjun’s eyes met hers and for a heartbeat, the teasing arrogance was gone. There was only him, looking at her with something she couldn’t quite name. After school, Minjun unexpectedly offered to walk Hana home. “You don’t need me,” Hana said, hesitating as they stepped into the quiet streets. “I know,” Minjun replied, keeping pace beside her. “But I want to. Just… let me.” Hana’s heart fluttered. She wasn’t used to such attention and it made her feel both special and vulnerable. As they walked, Minjun reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, Hana’s breath caught. The gesture was simple, yet intimate, and her face burned with warmth. “Why… are you being nice to me?” she asked softly, unable to hide her confusion. “I like seeing you like this,” Minjun admitted. “Not perfect, not polished… just… you.” Hana’s heart skipped again. She wanted to say something to tell him she felt the same, but the words stuck in her throat. Just then, Jisoo appeared from around the corner carrying his school bag. He had been walking behind them quietly, as he usually did. “Hana, wait!” Jisoo’s voice was firm, but not harsh. Minjun’s gaze flicked to him, sharp for a moment before softening again. Hana felt tension rise between the two boys she cared about. “Jisoo,” she said, placing a hand gently on his arm “It’s fine. We’re just walking home.” Jisoo looked at her, concern and frustration mixing in his expression. He opened his mouth to argue then closed it, letting her lead the way. Hana couldn’t help but notice the small, protective gestures from Jisoo the way he walked a little closer, keeping a subtle watch over her. She felt a pang of guilt, knowing she had been drawn to Minjun’s attention, even if Jisoo’s loyalty was unwavering. They turned down a quiet alley, and Minjun slowed, stopping beside Hana. “I don’t want anyone to scare you,” he said quietly. “Those notes… I don’t know who’s sending them, but I’ll make sure you’re safe.” Hana’s chest tightened. His words were caring, but there was an edge he sounded serious, determined. She wanted to trust him completely, but part of her couldn’t ignore the warning in the notes or Jisoo’s watchful eyes. “Thank you,” she whispered, looking up at him. Minjun smiled softly. “You’re welcome. And Hana… I like being around you. I don’t say it often but… you make things… easier.” Her heart raced. The closeness, the warmth, the sincerity it was unlike anything she had expected from him. For a moment, the world around them seemed to disappear. Hana wanted to stay in that moment forever, to let the tension between them melt into something softer, something romantic. But reality intruded Jisoo was still there, walking a few steps behind and the shadows of the mysterious notes lingered in her mind. As they reached the end of the alley, Minjun paused. He looked at Hana eyes searching hers. “Tomorrow,” he said, voice low “come to the literature club early. I want to show you something.” Hana nodded, heart pounding. “Okay.” Minjun’s hand brushed hers again as they parted ways. Hana felt her knees weaken slightly. She had no idea what he wanted to show her, but the anticipation made her heart flutter in ways she couldn’t control. Jisoo fell into step beside her as she continued home. He didn’t speak at first, but Hana could feel the tension in his presence. “You’re smiling,” he said finally, a hint of irritation in his tone. “Why?” Hana bit her lip, unsure how to answer. “Nothing… just… thinking.” Jisoo sighed but didn’t push further. She knew he was worried, but she couldn’t deny that Minjun’s attention made her feel alive in a way she hadn’t expected. That night, Hana lay in bed replaying the day in her mind. Minjun’s gentle words, his subtle touches, and the small smile he had given her they all lingered in her thoughts. Her heart ached with confusion and excitement caught between the two boys who both meant so much to her. And somewhere, in the quiet shadows of her room she could feel the invisible threat of the notes. Whoever was watching her was still out there, still waiting. But for the first Hana realized something even in the face of fear, even with her heart caught between Minjun and Jisoo, she wanted to step forward. She wanted to face the day, face the attention, and face the feelings that were slowly growing inside her. Tomorrow, she promised herself, she would meet Minjun at the club. She would see what he wanted to show her. And maybe just maybe she would start to understand the strange pull she felt toward him. The shadows were still there, but so was something else a spark of hope, a whisper of something beautiful waiting to bloom.
