Chapter 28: To keep your head down

After Renee hung up on me decisively, I no longer had any illusions about her, and I had to suffer the consequences of my own misdeeds.

In fact, it was perfectly normal for Renee not to want to come to the rescue, and it was really rude of me to threaten her, “Don't let me see her in Suzhou.”

Natalie and Harlan sat on the sofa to my left, while Brittany and Robert sat to the right. I was still alone in the middle.

Harlan and Natalie looked around and asked me in unison, “Where's your girlfriend?”

“She's not available tonight, let's just have fun,” I said in response.

Natalie said with a displeased look, “Don't be a spoilsport, just call me again to make a date, we'll be free later.”

I glared at Natalie and said, “Little stubborn girl, what are you fighting with me for! I said she was busy, so she is busy, why are you so stubborn!”

“Don't bullshit, hurry up and call your girlfriend, let me see what my future sister-in-law looks like!” Harlan kicked me and said.

Robert added, “Lucas, don't be a spoilsport. Time is made up of moments. Invite your girlfriend out to play. The same faces are getting old.”

I looked at Brittany. At this point, deliberately keeping my distance from her made it seem like I couldn't let go. I said, ”I think it's full of energy. Brittany and I haven't seen each other in more than three years, so the same faces have become new faces, right, Brittany's sister-in-law?”

Brittany, who had not spoken since entering, looked at me and asked, “What did you call me?”

Brittany's question immediately destroyed the cool gesture I had just deliberately made, and for a moment I didn't know how to respond to Brittany's words.

Harlan quickly helped me out of the situation and said to Brittany, ”Lucas didn't call you wrong. Strictly speaking, you are considered his sister-in-law. When you and Robert get married, then it will be proper.”

Brittany looked at Harlan and said, “Why are you so excited? Did I say he was wrong? I didn't hear you clearly just now.”

Harlan smiled awkwardly, and I remained silent. Robert put his arm around Brittany and whispered something in her ear that no one else could hear, but this intimate gesture made my heart ache again.

At this moment, I finally understood how Robert must have felt when Brittany and I were together and did intimate things without any reservations.

I took a sip of my beer and felt a little like leaving. I knew that as long as I still loved Brittany, gatherings like this would be torture for me. But in Robert's, and even Harlan and Natalie's, eyes, I had already let go of Brittany. After all, more than two years had passed, and I had a new “girlfriend” after all.

The waiter brought the drinks that Harlan and the others had ordered. They all started drinking. Natalie leaned over to me and whispered, “Lucas, we know you have a girlfriend now. Harlan and I are really happy for you. We were worried that you couldn't let Brittany go, but it seems that our worries were unnecessary...”

A wave of bitterness washed over me. At this moment, even if everyone knew that I couldn't let go of Brittany, what would happen? It would be better to keep up the lie and reassure my friends.

Natalie nudged me in the silence and said, “Hurry up and get your girlfriend to come over and introduce her to us. We'll have another best friend to go shopping with!”

I forced a smile and said, ”Next time, she's really busy today!”

Just then, almost all the eyes in the bar suddenly focused on a graceful figure approaching. She had a great figure and a graceful walk, but I couldn't quite see her face in the flickering light.

Renee looked at me and said, “You're the one threatening me, so how can you say I'm looking for trouble? Now that I'm here, just do it.”

I felt like a snake with its seven vital points (Chinese proverb meaning the vital spot) seized by Renee, and was afraid that she would embarrass me in front of everyone, so I had to soften my tone and say, ‘I was just angry, so don't hold it against me, okay?”

Renee said disdainfully, ’Where's the arrogance you were so proud of just now?”

“Big sister, I was wrong, I will behave myself in the future!”

“Are you apologizing?”

“I guess so.”

“Say it again.”

I felt a sense of powerlessness, and I couldn't resist, so I gritted my teeth and said, “I was wrong, I will behave myself in the future!”

Over there, Harlan shouted at me, ”Lucas, what are you whispering about, hurry up and introduce your girlfriend to us.”

“I'm coming,“ I answered, and then asked Renee, ‘Are you angry now?”

Renee sat in the seat I had just occupied, greeted the people, and I sat down next to her.

Natalie said to me with a smile, “Lucas, you have good taste. Your girlfriend is awesome and beautiful!”

“That's for sure, we're a perfect match! Let me formally introduce you to my girlfriend Renee.” I sounded pleased with myself, but my heart was full of trepidation. God knows what was going through the mind of this woman who didn't play by the rules.

“Hello everyone,” Renee smiled and greeted everyone.

Harlan, Natalie, Robert, in order, introduced themselves to Renee, and finally Brittany.

Renee and Brittany looked at each other, with the same indifferent expression, but I could not read what was hidden beneath their expressions.

Brittany spoke first, ”We met the other day.”

Renee just nodded, strictly speaking, she was not the kind of person who was familiar with strangers, and was a bit aloof in front of strangers.

“My name is Brittany, I'm Lucas's ex-girlfriend.”

I nervously looked at Renee. If she didn't expose me at this time, then I could get through this uncomfortable party without incident.

“It's been a while,” Renee replied vaguely, but it was a flawless answer.

Natalie smiled and said, “From now on, we'll leave Lucas to you. He's wild and you need to keep a closer eye on him.”

Renee nodded and said, ”I will, but he's got a bit of a bad character!”

Natalie didn't react immediately, looking at Renee and then at me with a puzzled expression.
