Amber POV
If someone asked me what I was like four years ago I would have said, I was just like every other sixteen-year-old. I went to school, did my homework, followed the rules and stayed out of trouble. But then I met the two most popular boys in school and I discovered their biggest secret, that was the day my life came crashing down or more accurately life-changing.
So who am I? Amber Wesler. My mum was a single parent. Supposedly my father left my mum for another woman before I was born. To this day I have no idea where or what he looks like because my mum is reluctant to share such details, perhaps he was a bad man and she was just trying to protect me. I held resentment towards him because my mother had to work long hours to support us and I didn't get to see her much. However, I couldn't deny I was a tad curious as to who he might be.
Five years ago mum was hired by this company and we moved around a lot which meant new schools, new friends and by the sixth school I gave up trying to make new friends. I wasn't around very long to keep the friendships. I know mum feels guilty so I try not to discuss those topics with her. Until one day my mum started dating this guy, Alex. Turns out, the guy happened to own the company she worked for and he had transferred her to where we are now. Fairleigh Valley. Small quiet town, with nothing really to complain about. She seems happy and that's good enough for me. As for me well that meant a new school again. I didn't want to get my hopes up too much, but mum says this is different. That we're here to stay.
So here I was on the first day at my new school. The halls were bustling with students, and I made my way to the office for my class schedule.
"You must be Amber Wesler."
"How are you, my dear?"
"I'm okay. I need my class schedule, please. "
"Oh yes, give me a moment."
She taps away at her keyboard, a few clicks on her mouse, and then I hear the printer beside her start humming. She pulls the sheet from it and walks out from behind her desk.
"Follow me, my dear."
She takes me to my locker and gives me the code to open it. She then passes me my schedule and a map of the entire school and proceeds to tell me where my next class is before leaving me.
I open up my locker door.
BANG!
I looked behind and saw a handsome boy on the floor rubbing his head and two other boys standing closely behind him asking if he was alright. s**t.
"I'm so sorry I didn't see you. You came out of nowhere. "
I offered a hand and he finally looked at me.
"I'm fine," he says as he takes my hand and I pull up from the ground. The boy on his right shuts my locker door.
"Damn. She did quite a number on you. " I glanced over to see a dent in my locker.
"We should see the nurse."
"I'm fine really." He smiles.
"No, I think you should. You might have a concussion."
The boys behind him patted him on the back.
"See you in class."
I looked around. I had no idea where the nurse station was.
"You're new here, aren't you?" He asked.
"What gave that away?" I gave a small, weak smile.
"Sorry, I don't know where the nurse station is."
"I'll show you, in case you smack anyone else in the face with your locker in the future," he grins.
"Again, I'm sorry. They really shouldn't keep the lockers so close to the classroom door. "
We head down the empty hallway, and the boy strikes up small talk.
"What's your name?"
"Amber. Yours? " I replied.
"Kyle."
"Nice to meet you."
"I can't say the same about you."
"I'm sorry."
"Relax, kid. You apologise a lot. Have you ever noticed that? "
Yeah, I know, sorry. "s**t sorry, I'm going to shut up now."
He laughs.
We entered the nurse’s room, and we were greeted by the nurse.
"Mr Finley, what can I do for you?"
"Amber smacked me in the head with her locker door."
"Did she?" She looks at my brows furrowed, but her look softens when I say,
"It was an accident. He walked into it. "
"Sit down on the bed. Let me examine you. "
She shines a torch into his eyes, does the routine health check, asks him a few questions, and ends the examination.
"If you feel nauseous, dizziness comes back here." I'll give you a note for your teacher. " She hands one to each of us and we head back into the hall.
"What's your class schedule?"
I pull mine out and show it to him.
"We have every class together except for visual arts. Come with me, bio is our first class."
"Thanks."
We entered the room. The teacher was annoyed but saw our notes and relaxed a little.
"Class, meet our new student, Amber Wesler."
The teacher proceeds to tell me to sit down, and I sit in the empty seat in the far right-back corner next to the window. I looked across the room to see Kyle sitting with his friends from earlier.
"Alright, class, let's begin on page 242 of your textbook."
Not a good start to my first day. I sighed.
The rest of the day went by pretty quickly, and before I knew it, I realised it was lunchtime. I grabbed my lunch from the cafeteria and sat outside on the grass. A guilty habit of mine was to watch people and guess their life stories. I know it’s weird for a 16-year-old, but it kept me entertained. I watched the students kick balls on the soccer field. Some were sitting around eating their lunch, and then I saw a small, petite brunette girl heading straight for me.
"Hey, I'm Jasmine." She waves, smiling.
"Amber."
"Oh, I know. You’re the girl who donged my brother’s head. "
It was an accident. He walked into it. "
"Chill" I'm only teasing. Kyle mentioned you are a sophomore. "
"Did he now?"
Yeah, I’m a freshman. I'm exactly a year younger than he is. "
"Really?"
Yeah, it's okay I guess. I gave up on hosting my parties since everyone wanted to go to his. "
"Oh, is he the popular kid?"
"He doesn't act like it though." The rest of them are a rowdy bunch. And then there's my oldest brother, Ronan, the leader. "Typical bad boy every girl wants."
"Naturally," I said. Jasmine responds with a small, cute laugh. I noted to myself to stay clear of the older brother.
"Do you want to come to my house after school?"
I know I said I wasn't going to make friends, let alone try, but eh, what the hell?
"I have a free period after lunch."
"Girl, what are you still doing here? Most people leave."
"I get bored easily at home."
"Fair enough. I have a free period, so we can ditch early."
She grabs my hand and links her arm with mine. We got into her car, which was a white jeep, and drove to her house.
As we pulled up, the house was quite large and modern. They were loaded. We walked in, and Jasmine headed for the kitchen.
"I will get us some drinks."
"Water please."
"My room is upstairs, the last door on the right."
I made my way up and noticed one of the doors was open. On the bed was a shirtless boy. I see his grey eyes peeking up over his phone. This must be Ronan, and man, he was hot.
He gets up to walk over and leans on the door frame. I couldn't help but scan him up and down. Did he seriously have an 8-pack? How does a 17-year-old have an 8-pack?
Ronan POV
I sprawled out on my bed, scrolling through my phone and responding to yet another text message from Caitylin, my now ex-girlfriend. She was a pain in the ass, clingy. It was pathetic.
A sudden scent fills my nostrils...pineapples mixed with lilac such a strange combination but I loved it. I was drinking it and it made sense my wolf came barreling up from within me.
Mate. My wolf shouted, jumping for joy.
I looked up and there she was. My mate. My precious mate standing at my door staring back at me with her gorgeous hazel eyes, her mousy brown hair dangled across her cleavage. It was a downer I wanted to see every inch of her. Her shirt clung to her defining her curves. f**k. My gaze slithered its way to her marking spot, there was nothing more I wanted to do than to claim her. I held back with restraint and leaned against the door frame drinking in her strong scent.
"Hello love. You lost?"
She looked so innocent and fragile.
Come on let us claim her. NOW!
Between my wolf screaming at me and her heavenly scent it was difficult to concentrate on what she was saying I had to ask her to repeat herself. Embarrassing. Focus.
Come on let us claim her. NOW!
"I'm looking for Jasmine's room."
"Next room love."
Our exchange was odd like it was one-sided. I was standing quite close to her considering, was she not getting my hints? She blushed a little when I called her love. I expected more from my mate. My wolf was upset and I couldn't understand why.
Something is wrong.
Of course, I am interrupted when I see my sister Jasmine coming up the stairs.
"Ronan, what are you doing here your supposed to be in chemistry class?"
Always nosy. Has she not learned to stay out of my business.
"I ditched it."
"Mum's not going to be happy. "
And here comes the lecture. Why does it even matter whether I tend the school dad owns the bloody place, I was a straight-A student practically a genius who cares if I skip a few classes.
"She won't know if you keep your mouth shut."
"Touchy. Caitlyn piss you off again?"
Fuck. Why did you have to bring up her in front of my mate. My gaze returns to my mate, "We're not together." I smirked. That's right I'm single baby.
"Right, your off and on again girlfriend."
"Bugger off Jasmine."
My mate's expression hadn't changed. Why not? I'm single, I'm your mate. Why aren't you responding? You should be all over me. The girl was making me agitated. Nothing wrong with me. I'm hot. Every girl wants me.
You're fine, but something is wrong with our mate.
What exactly? I shouted at my wolf but he couldn't give me an answer.
"I will. Let's go, Amber."
I repeated her name out loud "Amber" I loved how it rolled off my tongue. "Pleasure to meet you."
I lean in and the sparks flew as soon as my lips touched her soft velvety cheek. She instantly fires back with a slap across my face.
Why the f**k did my mate just slap me? Doesn't she recognise me? I'M YOUR MATE. Her movement surprised me but also infuriated me. I mean the girl could hit me because my face was stinging as if I had been stung by a bee.
"s**t I'm sorry." she blurted out not even a second after.
I rubbed my cheek, scowling at her. Two can play this game. You want to play hard to get so be it. I like a challenge.
Amber POV
I didn't even think when I slapped him. Who the hell does this guy think he is? The boy had no respect for personal space. Who does that?
His cute innocent smile turns into an intense glare as I watched him rub his cheek.
"Listen here, love; if you are going to slap someone, at least own it." He spits and slams the door in my face. I looked over at Jasmine, who just shrugged her shoulders.
"He just..." I was stunned a little.
"I apologise on behalf of my brother." Her voice increases in volume, almost shouting, "He can be a real asshole who thinks he's god’s gift to women."
