Amber POV
Although I wasn't done with the Finley brothers, at lunchtime I went over to Kyle's table. There were a couple of girls snickering and touching his arm, typical sight for a popular boy that was single. I mean assumed he was. The table falls silent when I approached it.
"Kyle, can I speak with you?"
"Sure." He smile, was so innocent and sweet almost enough to make me melt and forget what I was actually supposed to speak to him about. He had this quite calming aura effect.
We go outside but I look inside the glass windows of the cafeteria his friends were lined up watching us like we were some entertainment show and we were the star actors.
"Thanks for this morning and in free period but I don't need you fighting my battles for me. I'm very well capable of handling myself."
"Listen Ronan is-"
I cut him off "I don't care much about what you have to say about him. So we good?"
He chuckles to himself."What's so funny?"
"Oh no. You can handle yourself."
He leaves me chuckling even harder. I was grateful when I heard the bell ring. I could finally leave this place. The only decent thing about the Finley family was Jasmine. The rest were nothing but trouble but I hadn't met their parents yet, hopefully, they were okay and not total nutjobs like their sons. Kyle wasn't too bad. He was a sweetie but annoying. I just didn't like it when people fought on my behalf. Ronan; the boy gave me a headache just thinking about him. The s****l deviant he was.
When I arrived home I quickly jumped into the shower, got changed and by the time I was done mum's boyfriend had arrived and was sitting in the living room.
"Alex this is my daughter Amber."
He gets up and holds out his hand to which I respond by shaking it. It was a little awkward this was the first time mum brought a guy home to meet me. I think it was so I wouldn't get too attached in case the relationship failed but she must have seen a future with Alex.
"I made spaghetti tonight." mum announced.
"Yummy my favourite" Alex hummed and he kisses her cheek.
"Mum do you need any help?"
"You can set up the table for me please."
I grabbed the table mats and cutlery from the kitchen draw. Alex was kind enough to help me, not that I needed it anyway. It was sweet.
"Amber your mother tells me you attend Fairleigh High school as a sophomore. How are you finding it?"
"Interesting." And a headache but I wasn't going to say that. "I made a friend."
Mum's face lights up, "Really who? You should bring them over for a movie night."
"Jasmine Finley. She's a freshman but I have classes with her brother Kyle."
"A boy hey?" My mum smirks.
Truth be told this was probably the first time I mentioned anything about the opposite s*x with her.
"It's not what you think. His just a classmate."
A troublemaker likes his brother. Again I wasn't going to tell my mum that.
"Nice to hear that you're settling in well. Hopefully, you won't need to move schools again." Alex smiles.
"That would be nice. Put some roots down." Mum said.
"Have you thought about college?" Alex asked.
"Ahh no. Should I?"
I had never really thought that far ahead let alone college.
"Always good to prepare early. Maybe join a school activity for extra credits to build up that resume before graduation." Alex suggested.
"Amber here is very talented with drawing. Hun, why don't you bring some of your sketchbooks down and show Alex?"
"Sure." I replied.
I left the table and returned with my sketchbook placing it in front of Alex on the table. He turns each page his smile growing wider each time. I was quite proud of my drawings. The only place I could escape and let my imagination run wild.
"This is impressive. You certainly do have a talent. What's your favourite thing to draw?"
"Wolves."
"Really?" Mum looked at me a little surprised. "But I don't see any."
"I have a separate sketchbook just for them. I call it my werewolf collection."
My mum chokes on her food and gasps for air as Alex rubbed her back.
"Mum? You okay?" I said in a worrisome tone, her face went bright red then purple for like a second.
"I'm fine, food went down the wrong pipe." She smiles taking a sip from her water.
"Can I see them?" Alex asks.
"Maybe another time."
"Please." Alex asked he sat there pouting.
"Fine. Back in a minute."
I returned with three more sketchbooks chock of blocks overflowing with drawings. I may have an obsession with werewolves, even my room is covered with drawings and posters of them.
"Oh my, you weren't kidding they were your favourite" mum said looking still surprised. They scanned each page carefully.
"Incredible. Does your school have an art program?"
"Visual arts but there are art clubs I could join."
I never joined any clubs or afterschool activities because we moved around frequently but I always checked out the art clubs at each school I went to.
"Amber I seriously suggest you join this club. Maybe art school for college, I could even offer your an internship at my company in the graphics department designing logos, covers and advertising. I'm sure we would be able to make use of your talent."
"That's amazing. Thank you, Alex. Amber will defiantly consider won't you?"
I never expected this was how my dinner with mum's boyfriend to go. My life after graduation was being planned out for me with a job already lined up. Maybe this is what it felt like to have a father figure in my life.
"Yeah, I'll consider it."
"Excellent." Alex smiles.
"Well, I'm pooped. I've had an exhausting day. If you would excuse me."
"Okay, hun."
"Pleasure to meet you, Amber."
"Likewise."
I headed to my bedroom finished my homework and turned in for the night.
