a new beginning

The summer passed faster than either of them expected. Before they knew it, the day had finally arrived. The day they would leave Crestwood High behind and begin a new chapter of their lives. Amara stood outside the writing academy, clutching the strap of her bag. Students walked around excitedly, talking about classes, dorms, and making new friends. She should have been excited too. But she was nervous. Very nervous. Everything was different. Everything was new. "What if I don't fit in?" she whispered. "You'll be fine." Amara immediately recognized the voice. She turned around. Ethan. A smile spread across her face. "You scared me." He laughed. "You say that every time." "Because you keep appearing out of nowhere." The two walked across the campus together. Unlike high school, nobody knew their story here. Nobody knew who they were. They were starting over. And somehow, that felt exciting. Over the next few weeks, college life settled into a routine. Amara loved her writing classes. For the first time, she was surrounded by people who loved stories as much as she did. Meanwhile, Ethan thrived in architecture school. His sketches quickly impressed his professors. Everything seemed perfect. Until someone new arrived. Her name was Lily Carter. She was smart. Funny. Confident. And she happened to be Ethan's architecture partner. At first, Amara didn't think much of it. But Lily and Ethan spent a lot of time together. Group projects. Presentations. Study sessions. The more Amara saw them together, the more uncomfortable she felt. One afternoon, she spotted them laughing outside the library. Something twisted inside her chest. Jealousy. A feeling she hated. That evening, Ethan noticed she was unusually quiet. "Everything okay?" "Fine." "You don't sound fine." "I'm okay." Ethan stopped walking. "Amara." She sighed. "What?" "Talk to me." For a moment, she hesitated. Then the words slipped out. "I saw you with Lily." Ethan blinked. "Lily?" "You seem really close." Understanding immediately crossed his face. "Oh." Amara looked away. "This is stupid." "No, it's not." She frowned. "It isn't?" Ethan smiled softly. "You're jealous." Amara groaned. "Please don't say it like that." He laughed. But then his expression became serious. "Amara." She looked at him. "There's nothing between me and Lily." "Really?" "Really." He gently took her hand. "The only girl I want is standing right in front of me." Heat rushed to her cheeks. Even after all this time, he still had a way of making her blush. The next day, Amara finally met Lily properly. To her surprise, Lily was incredibly nice. In fact, Lily spent most of their conversation talking about someone she liked back home. By the end of the day, Amara felt embarrassed for worrying. That night, she called Ethan. "I owe you an apology." "For what?" "I was being ridiculous." Ethan laughed. "A little." "Thanks." "Anytime." The months passed peacefully. Until another surprise arrived. The academy announced a national competition. The winning writer would have their work published. And the winning architect would help design a real community project. The competition was huge. Thousands of students planned to enter. Both Amara and Ethan immediately signed up. The challenge pushed them harder than ever before. Late nights. Endless drafts. Countless revisions. Some days they felt exhausted. Some days they wanted to quit. But they kept encouraging each other. Just like always. Finally, competition day arrived. Amara submitted her story. Ethan submitted his design. Then all they could do was wait. Weeks later, students gathered in the auditorium for the results. Amara's hands trembled. Ethan squeezed her shoulder reassuringly. The host stepped onto the stage. "The winner of the National Writing Competition is..." Silence filled the room. "Amara Okafor." For a moment, she couldn't move. Then the crowd erupted into applause. Tears immediately filled her eyes. She had done it. Her dream was finally coming true. Minutes later, another announcement followed. "The winner of the Architecture Competition is..." Ethan held his breath. "Ethan Williams." The auditorium exploded with cheers once again. Amara laughed through her tears. They had both won. Together. After the ceremony, they sat beneath a tree near campus. Not the same tree from high school. But close enough. The evening sky glowed orange and pink. Ethan looked at her. "You know, if I hadn't sat beside you that first day..." Amara smiled. "You'd probably still be getting lost around school." He laughed. "Probably." She leaned against his shoulder. "And I'd probably still think I was invisible." Ethan wrapped an arm around her. "Not anymore." The wind gently moved through the leaves above them. Everything felt calm. Everything felt right. But neither of them knew that another challenge was waiting just around the corner. A challenge that would test their relationship in ways they never imagined. And for the first time since meeting each other, distance would no longer be their biggest problem.
