my first hello

1659 Words
The hallway was crowded as usual. Students laughed, talked, and rushed to their classes. Some walked in groups while others stood by their lockers, gossiping about the latest school drama. But among all those students was a girl nobody seemed to notice. Her name was Amara. She wasn't the most popular girl in school. She wasn't the prettiest according to the students who judged everyone by appearance. She wasn't rich either. Most days, she felt invisible. Amara quietly adjusted the straps of her backpack and walked through the hallway, keeping her eyes on the floor. Nobody greeted her. Nobody smiled at her. Nobody cared. At least, that's what she thought. The bell rang loudly. She hurried into her classroom and sat in her usual seat near the window. It was her favorite place because she could stare outside whenever she felt lonely. "Good morning, class," the teacher said. The students responded lazily. "Before we begin, I'd like to introduce a new student." The room instantly became interested. A tall boy walked into the classroom. His uniform fit perfectly, and his dark hair fell slightly over his forehead. Several girls immediately started whispering. "His name is Ethan Williams. He transferred here this week." Ethan smiled politely. "Hi, everyone." The girls nearly melted. Amara rolled her eyes and looked back out the window. Another handsome boy. Another student everyone would obsess over. The teacher looked around. "Ethan, there's an empty seat beside Amara." Amara froze. Wait. Beside me? Ethan walked over and sat down next to her. For a second, neither of them spoke. Then he turned toward her. "Hi." Amara looked up. It was such a simple word. Just one word. Yet somehow nobody had said it to her in a very long time. "Hi," she replied quietly. Ethan smiled. "My first friend in this school." Amara blinked. Friend? Nobody had ever called her that before. The teacher began teaching, but Amara found it difficult to focus. Why was he talking to her? Why wasn't he trying to impress the popular girls? Why her? At lunch break, Amara grabbed her food and headed toward her usual table under a tree near the football field. She expected to sit alone. Like always. But a shadow suddenly appeared across the table. She looked up. It was Ethan. "Mind if I sit here?" he asked. Amara stared at him. "You know there are plenty of other tables." "I know." "So why here?" He shrugged. "Because you're here." Her heart skipped a beat. She quickly looked away. The last thing she needed was to start imagining things. As the days passed, Ethan continued sitting with her. They talked about movies, books, music, and their dreams. For the first time in years, Amara laughed. Really laughed. And every time she laughed, Ethan smiled as if hearing it was his favorite thing in the world. Soon, people started noticing. The popular girls didn't like it. Especially Sophia. Sophia was beautiful, rich, and used to getting whatever she wanted. Including attention. One afternoon, she cornered Amara near her locker. "What exactly is going on between you and Ethan?" Amara frowned. "Nothing." Sophia crossed her arms. "Then stay away from him." Amara felt anger rising inside her. "He's not your property." Sophia's eyes narrowed. "You'll regret this." For the rest of the day, rumors spread around school. People whispered when Amara walked by. Some laughed. Some pointed. Old feelings of loneliness returned. That evening, Amara sat on her bed staring at her phone. A message appeared. Ethan. Ethan: Ignore them. Amara: Easier said than done. Ethan: They don't know the real you. Amara: And what if nobody ever wants to? Several seconds passed. Then another message arrived. Ethan: I do. Amara's heart raced. She read the message over and over again. I do. Three simple words. Yet they meant everything. The next morning, Ethan was waiting for her outside school. When he saw her, he smiled. "Good morning." Amara smiled back. For the first time in years, she looked forward to coming to school. Neither of them realized someone was secretly watching them from across the street. Someone who wasn't happy about their growing friendship. And someone who was about to change everything. Just as Amara and Ethan began getting closer, a shocking secret from Ethan's past was about to surface. The weekend passed slowly. Amara couldn't stop thinking about Ethan's message. I do. Three simple words. But they stayed in her mind long after she put her phone away. Monday morning arrived. As usual, Ethan was waiting outside the school gate. His smile immediately appeared when he saw her. "Morning, Amara." "Morning." Together they walked into school. Neither noticed the girl watching them from a parked car across the street. The girl looked angry. Very angry. She clenched a photograph in her hand. A photograph of Ethan. And another girl. The bell rang. Classes began. Everything seemed normal until lunchtime. Amara was sitting beneath their usual tree when Sophia suddenly appeared. This time she wasn't alone. Several girls stood behind her. "Still hanging around Ethan?" Sophia asked. Amara sighed. "Why do you care so much?" Sophia smirked. "Maybe because I know something you don't." Amara frowned. "What are you talking about?" Before Sophia could answer, Ethan appeared. "Leave her alone." Sophia rolled her eyes. "Whatever." The girls walked away. But Amara noticed something strange. For the first time, Ethan looked nervous. That evening Amara received an anonymous message. Her heart dropped when she opened it. Attached was a photograph. Ethan. Standing beside a beautiful girl. The girl was holding his hand. Below the picture was a single message. Ask him about Olivia. Amara stared at the screen. Who was Olivia? The next day she confronted him. "Ethan." He looked up. "Yeah?" She showed him the picture. The color immediately drained from his face. For several seconds he said nothing. Then he quietly sat down. "Where did you get that?" "So it's real?" He looked away. "Yes." Amara felt a knot form in her stomach. "Who is she?" Ethan sighed heavily. "Her name is Olivia." The silence felt endless. "Was she your girlfriend?" "Yes." The word hurt more than Amara expected. "But she's my ex." Amara remained quiet. Ethan rubbed his forehead. "We dated at my old school." "What happened?" His expression darkened. "She cheated on me." Amara blinked. "What?" "I found out she was seeing someone else." His voice sounded bitter. "So I ended things." Amara slowly sat beside him. "Then why keep it secret?" "I didn't." He looked at her. "You just never asked." She couldn't argue with that. The anonymous messages continued. Every day. Pictures. Rumors. Lies. Someone clearly wanted to destroy Ethan's reputation. Then one afternoon the mystery finally revealed itself. Olivia arrived at Crestwood High. The moment students saw her, gossip exploded. She was beautiful. Confident. And apparently determined to get Ethan back. Amara watched from across the hallway as Olivia walked directly toward Ethan. Without warning, Olivia hugged him. The hallway gasped. Amara froze. Ethan immediately stepped back. "Don't." Olivia smiled. "I missed you." "No." The smile disappeared. "You don't get to do this." Olivia's eyes narrowed. "And who is she?" Her gaze shifted toward Amara. Ethan answered immediately. "Someone important." Amara's heart skipped. Olivia noticed. And she didn't like it. Not one bit. The following weeks became difficult. Olivia constantly tried to interfere. She spread rumors. Created drama. And did everything possible to separate Ethan and Amara. Meanwhile, Sophia secretly teamed up with Olivia. Together they became a nightmare. One Friday evening things reached a breaking point. A fake social media post appeared online. It made it look like Amara had insulted several students. By Monday everyone was angry. Amara walked through school hearing whispers everywhere. Some students openly mocked her. Others ignored her completely. Old feelings returned. The loneliness. The sadness. The feeling of being invisible. At lunch she sat alone beneath the tree. Tears filled her eyes. Maybe things would never change. Maybe she really didn't belong. Then someone sat beside her. Ethan. Without saying a word, he handed her a bottle of water. She laughed softly. "You always find me." "Because I look for you." The tears finally escaped. "I hate this." "I know." "They ruined everything." "No." He shook his head. "They didn't." Amara looked at him. "You still have me." Her heart melted. For a long moment neither spoke. Then Ethan gently took her hand. The world suddenly felt very quiet. "I don't care what anyone says." Amara couldn't look away. "I like you." There it was. The truth. Simple. Honest. Real. "I like you too." The biggest smile appeared on Ethan's face. For the first time, neither of them felt afraid. Over the following months they faced every challenge together. Eventually the rumors died. The truth came out. Olivia transferred back to her old school. Sophia finally gave up. And little by little, things improved. Amara wasn't invisible anymore. Not because she became popular. Not because everyone suddenly liked her. But because she finally realized her worth didn't depend on other people's opinions. It depended on how she saw herself. One afternoon near the end of the school year, Ethan and Amara sat beneath their tree. The same tree where everything had begun. Ethan smiled. "Remember our first conversation?" Amara laughed. "You mean when you randomly sat beside me?" "It wasn't random." "What?" "I wanted to sit beside you." She stared. "You didn't even know me." Ethan shrugged. "I wanted to." Amara smiled. "Why?" He thought for a moment. Then answered honestly. "Because everyone ignored you." She blinked. "And?" "And I wondered if maybe everyone was wrong." Amara felt tears fill her eyes. For years she had believed she was invisible. But someone had noticed. Someone had cared. Someone had chosen to say hello. And that single hello had changed everything. Ethan squeezed her hand. "What are you thinking about?" Amara smiled. "My first hello."
