Kord slipped out of bed and stared down at Doyle, finally asleep. Kord had kept him up and talking as long as he could. Deep into the night, Doyle began to nod off and Kord figured it would be all right to let him sleep. Doyle was a tough man yet he seemed so vulnerable bandaged and lying in the bed. Which made Kord’s problems seem even more complicated. Looking at Doyle, Kord realized he loved the guy more than he thought. He was just getting comfortable enough with this new life and then Jimmy shows up.
The silence and the darkness in the bedroom were complete, leaving Kord to face his thoughts and fears with nothing to distract him. The fears seemed larger, more threatening, even insurmountable.
