When his cell phone rang and a “Restricted Number” message appeared, Kord thought it was Jimmy and almost said his name when he answered. Some little warning signal went off at the back of his mind and all he said was, “Verlangen, what can I do for you?” “Hey, you big hunk, it’s me,” Doyle said, and Kord closed his eyes, grateful he hadn’t given the game away. “I’m using Brandon’s business phone. Mine is recharging. “What’s up, babe?” “The handwriting expert wants to see us. He’s got the results.” “Can’t he just email us?” “He insists.” “When?” “Half an hour.” Kord broke the connection and immediately called Jimmy to tell him they’d have to postpone their meeting. He was sure the kid would think he was lying. And why not? He’d lied to Jimmy before. But he wanted to make up for that
