Chapter Two
"Hey girl", I said as Adina opened the door for me and I walked in.
"How have you been? How is my godchild doing in that stomach of yours?" I asked, walking towards the sitting room.
"Your godchild has been naughty, I just can't wait for the months to pass by quickly and I should give birth", Adina complained, sitting on one of the couches.
"Stop complaining, you and your husband called the child from Heaven where it was peacefully staying with Baba God. And you want to be complaining", I said to Adina who rolled her eyes.
"Speaking of your husband, where is he?" I asked.
"He left the office late and now he is stuck in traffic. Just like you too, see the time you are coming to pick Adeife, it is past nine o'clock, Simi", Adina said.
"I know, I was just trying to finish my job and before I realized it, time has gone", I defended.
"Simi, don't you think it is high time, you give Adeife a complete family and stop having all this misconception about marriage", Adina advised.
"Adina, you know that love isn't for me and I can't marry someone who doesn't understand me. I am really complicated though I know Adeife needs a father figure in her life, I just need a little more time", I said remorsefully.
"Simisola, don't tell me that you haven't still moved on from", Adina managed to say before I interrupted her.
"Don't say his name, Adina. I don't want to hear it, I think it is time I went home", I said, standing up from the couch, heading to Martha's room where I saw Adeife sleeping next to Martha. I carried Adeife's things to my car before I came back and carefully carried my daughter to the car.
"Simi, I am sorry if any of my words hurt you tonight", Adina said to me after I placed Adeife on the backseat of my car.
"It is fine, Adina. I know you are just trying to look out for me and you want the very best for me. I really do appreciate it, Adina", I assured her.
"No matter what Simi, I want you to remember that you are not alone and I always love you", Adeife said.
"I love you too Adina", I smiled hugging her.
"Oya, come and be going before my goddaughter gets a body pain from sleeping on that backseat of yours", Adina scolded as I quickly entered the car and drove to my house, thinking about Adeife's father.
Days passed by, soon it was the weekend. Saturdays and Sundays are the days, I spend with Adeife. It is like mommy and daughter's days for both of us.
"Mommy, guess what Martha told me yesterday?" Adeife said as we settled down to watch a movie in my sitting room.
"What? Mommy is all ears, baby", I said.
"Martha and her family are going for a family trip to Paris. Can I go with them?" Adeife asked.
"Of course not, baby. It is called a family trip because it is for their family", I said.
"Am I not their family? You said that I am their family, that's what you said", Adeife said.
"Baby, you are their family always but your surname is Adeoye and theirs is Temola so you see that's a difference. This doesn't mean you are not their family, okay?" I tried to explain to her.
"But mommy, I really want to go on a family trip too", Adeife pleaded.
"I know you don't like me saying this but to be sincere mommy, you don't have anyone you are dating right now but at least have someone, mommy. I want to see you happy", Adeife advised.
"And who says I am not happy? When I have you, my cutie pie?" I said trying to change the topic but Adeife wasn't buying it.
"I am not five anymore, mommy. I am now six years old and I understand what is happening. You need a man and I need a father. Even though he is not my biological father, I don't care. I am always jealous of Martha and Maleek. Uncle Juwon is always there for both of them and aunty Adina too. I want the same for you and I, mommy", Adeife said putting me in a tight spot.
"Promise me that once it is next year, you will try and have a boyfriend", Adeife demanded looking at me with those brown eyes of hers which reminds me of her father.
"Next year, that's too near, baby", I said.
"Too much near? Simisola Adeoye, it is still November, you still have a month which is December. And December has thirty one days in it so you still have time", Adeife argued.
"Ahhh, why are you so smart?" I asked fondling with her hair.
"It is because I am your daughter. So what do you say mommy?' Adeife asked.
"Okay, fine. Mommy will try her best", I finally agreed.
"Really? I love you so much, mommy", Adeife said hugging so tight.
"I love you too, baby", I said pecking her on her cheeks.
"Wish you luck, mommy", She said smiling happily.
"I also wish you luck in your exams", I said.
I sighed heavily after I tucked sleeping Adeife into the bed. We just came back from the cross over service at the church, Adeife fell asleep almost immediately after 12. She also reminded me of our promise before she slept off. I pecked her on her head and went to my room where I took a bath and changed into a comfortable pyjamas.
In the afternoon, Adeife and I headed to Adina's house. We were warmly welcomed and exchanged gifts among ourselves. After having lunch, Adina and I sat in the backyard watching the children play with themselves while Juwon was watching some news update in the sitting room.
"So you want me to fix you on a blind date,?" Adina asked after I told her about the promise to Adeife.
"Yes, I know you have done guys who I might like. I mean you have been trying to convince you to meet up with some of them for a while and here is your chance", I said.
"Omo, I hope this goes well. After seven years, you've decided to move on. I am so proud of you, Simisola. Don't worry, you won't regret this decision, you have made", Adina assured me.
"I hope so too", I replied.
The next evening, I went to the restaurant where I was to meet my blind date. I waited for a while before Adina texted me that he won't be able to make it due to personal reasons. I felt disappointed and got up to leave when I saw him, Chidubem, Adeife's father.
I felt shocked all over, I wanted to quickly hide somewhere but it was too late when he called out my name and walked up to me with a big smile on his face.
"Hannah", He called me by my English name, the name that only call me that and this opened the door of memories as the memories that I shared with him kept flowing in my head.
