Chapter 2: At The Registry
AVA
The next day came hurriedly like the wind . I was nervous and I could hardly sleep that night. I kept turning and tossing on my bed.
Madame Alexa words kept drumming into my ears. I had to accept this offer. I also had to leave my brother's home. Ivana hadn't made it any easier for me since the past few weeks I have been living here.
I had nothing left on me, just a little change which would take me to the restaurant where I would meet Evans again.
The thought that I was getting married to the wealthiest and popular CEO came hard on me. It felt like a dream.
I started up on my bed even before the alarm went on. I felt so bad that Gerald knew nothing about this.
Guilt chewed hard on me , but I had to do this it was my only way of getting out of the social ladder quickly , the fact that I was getting married to him, I barely know him and he was arrogant it made me realize that the marriage was going to be a loveless one but I needed the money.
Marriage was the only way for me to get every luxury of life.
I jumped down from the bed like I was chased by a thousand demons .
I had a quick bath and hurriedly drank some cereal.
"You know you have to pay for that cereals when you get your first salary."Ivana said walking into the kitchen and I almost jumped. She had walked so quietly that I didn't hear her come in .
Just then a car honked from outside and she glanced through the window.
"I thought you said you had a job at the restaurant , who is that ? Your boss?"
Without giving her a reply , I went to the living room and parted the curtains to see a different Mercedes-Benz, not the other one I had seen the day before .And there was Evans leaning against the car, his arms folded across his chest.
"Bye, Ivana."
"Whatever." She hissed
I half ran outside , I was surprised that he even knew my address all thanks to Madame Alexa.
"I'm — Good —"
"Enough of the pleasantries , " he said . " Get into the car."
Before I could see another word he got it all open and sat behind the steering wheel and i jumped in too
The car pulled out of the driveway and headed to God knows where.
I tried to pick a conversation with him but he just wouldn't listen or say anything so I kept to myself until we arrived at the registry.
Evans got down and glanced at his watch.
"I don't have all-time in the world , I have a business meeting to attend."
Oh , wow . I said to myself, staring at him.
"My grandmother gave me your address." He said his tone was flat.
"Do you always wake up this late? It's your wedding day and you are supposed to be up by six am." He said and ran his hands through his hair.
He must be kidding, I said to myself.
By 6:00 a.m ?
"You are the one that should have called me." He muttered to himself as he told the stairs .
I stood there staring at the car not knowing what to say. How was I supposed to call him when I do not even have his number?
I quickly turned around to meet his long strides, we were at the hall when he whispered to me.
"This is a contract marriage and is supposed to last two years."
My eyes felt wide open and I stared at him.
"But your grandmother said it's five years."
He said nothing, giving me a short funny look.
In a few minutes we were already done with the formalities and while he walked to the parking lot , I half ran behind him trying to catch up .
The sun was already out and my stomach rumbled again.
"Goodness." I cursed under my breath and I almost bumped into him.
"What's that noise?" He turned to me and I felt so embarrassed that I wanted to vanish.
"I would have loved to take you to a restaurant. Like I said earlier, I have a very important business meeting to attend. I need to secure a contract. It is much more important than having lunch ."
"Oh—" was the only thing I managed to say.
He brought out his wallet and counted some cash which was handed to me.
My eyes bulged; they were pretty enough to get myself a dress or two at the small boutique downtown.
"Use this and treat yourself to some special lunch."He handed the wad of cash to me and I took it with shaky hands.
He brought out a house and threw them at me. I caught it in midair as he dialed the number on his phone.
"You have to wait in the hall , I'm calling my driver now. He will take you back to the house when you are done at the restaurant." He instructed.
"No problem."
"I have lots of maids , and you are free to ask them to do your bidding"
I gave a small nod watching his sensual lips move when he spoke , lips that begged to be kissed.
"I think there is a restaurant nearby."he said looking around in confusion."you can make use of the GPS if you can't find it."
Then he looked at me with a hint of surprise in his eyes.
"You aren't saying anything, hope you are not hearing impaired?" He asked and I frowned, looking a bit angry.
"I'm not."
"Oh, that's good I thought as much." He said. " Remember this marriage is one of convenience , no catching of silly feelings. It is a win-win situation and after two years we will both go our separate ways."
Again I nodded.
"Before I forget, don't tell my grandma that we signed up for two years. "
