Chapter 2

The next morning, the servants moved in and out of the house nonstop. My books and laptop had been casually tossed into the hallway like piles of garbage. Enduring the sharp pain coursing through my body, I rushed back to the second-floor bedroom. Damien stood in the middle of the room, directing the workers. "Paint this wall pink, and replace the bed with a custom round one." I rushed forward and blocked the workers. "Damien! This is my room!" Damien stopped me with one hand, his brows slightly furrowed. "Alice had just been discharged from the hospital. The doctor said she needs a room with plenty of sunlight. This is the only south-facing room in the house, and it gets the best natural light. Be good, Helena. Stop making things difficult for Alice all the time." I gripped the door frame tightly. "Why should I? Just because she came back from abroad, I have to give up everything I own?" Damien's expression turned cold. Two burly men easily dragged me out of the room. I turned and ran out of the Lockwood residence, wandering the streets in a daze. By the time I regained my senses, I had already arrived downstairs at the company building. I swiped my access card over and over again, but it kept failing. The receptionist awkwardly approached me. "President Lockwood… oh, sorry, Miss Lockwood. Mr. Prescott issued a notice this morning. You've been suspended from your position." "On what grounds?" "Leaking confidential company information… and mental instability." Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, I saw Alice sitting in my seat. Damien stood behind her, holding her hand as he guided her signature across the documents. Alice seemed to sense my presence and looked up at me. Her hand trembled, accidentally knocking over a cup of coffee onto the desk. "Ah! It's so hot!" she cried out. Damien's expression changed instantly. He immediately grabbed her hand to inspect it, then suddenly turned his head and glared at me through the glass. Ignoring the staff trying to stop me, I pushed the door open and walked in. "Damien, you put someone who can't even read a financial report into this position. Are you trying to destroy the company?" While gently blowing on Alice's fingers, Damien replied coldly, "Alice is very talented. She just hasn't been given the opportunity yet. Helena, on the other hand, you don't even understand basic manners anymore." Alice curled herself into Damien's arms, her eyes red with tears. "I know you look down on me, Helena. But I'll learn. Damien says I'm smart. I'll definitely be able to help…" Soon, my father strode over with several security guards behind him. "That's enough! Throw her out! From now on, she is never allowed to step foot inside the company again!" The security guards roughly grabbed my arm. During the struggle, my bag fell to the floor, scattering its contents everywhere. A delicate velvet box rolled out. It was the engagement ring Damien had given me. I have always kept it with me. Damien's gaze landed on the ring, and his expression changed slightly, but he still said nothing. In front of everyone, I was thrown out of the building. My knees slammed against the concrete pavement, sending a piercing pain through my body. On the giant screen overhead, a live press conference was playing. Damien had his arm wrapped around Alice as they faced countless flashing cameras. "I would like to formally introduce Miss Alice Lockwood as the new Executive President of the group. The highly praised project proposal from before was actually Alice's idea all along. She is the true genius." But that proposal was something I had spent three months working on, reviewing tens of thousands of documents to complete. Now, it had become nothing more than a stepping stone for Alice to secure her position. I stared at the hypocritical face on the screen, feeling as though my heart had been torn into bloody pieces.
