CHAPTER 4: SOMETHING BELOW

271 Words
The stuffed rabbit sat on the dusty floor like an accusation. Aarav stared at it for a long time, unwilling to touch it. He had owned this exact toy—he was certain. His parents had thrown it away after that visit, saying it was filthy. But now, here it was, in the very room where he found it as a child, its seams torn, red bow faded but still intact. He picked it up slowly. A strange heat pulsed through it, though the room was cold. Something was very wrong here. Later that afternoon, while attempting to move furniture away from the fireplace, Aarav noticed something odd about the floor beneath it. A subtle vibration—barely noticeable—but there nonetheless, like a low hum traveling through the wood. He tapped with the end of a metal lamp. Thud. Thud. …Hollow. He dropped to his knees and began pulling at the edges of the carpet. Dust choked the air as he pried it up. Beneath the stone hearth, a small rectangular outline came into view—nearly invisible, except for the faint spiral etched into its center. It was a trapdoor, sealed with iron nails and age. It shouldn't have been there. The house had no basement. No records of one. No steps leading down. He fetched a crowbar from the garage, hands trembling. With a sharp c***k, the first nail gave. Then another. Aarav opened the trapdoor. A gust of ice-cold air rushed out, thick with the scent of soil, ash, and something else—something that breathed. And from deep below, a whisper rose: "You came back."
