The next morning she woke up to her sheets wet from sweat and she needed to take another cold shower to calm herself back down. Already there was a heavy ache between her legs and she was becoming irritable from it. Now all she could think about was how this was all Steven’s fault. If he would just accept this and they mated it wouldn’t be a problem. It may just be worth going into their office and letting them take her to get it out of the way. They could deal with everything after. It would certainly get the elder’s off of her back as they could make it official and she could dismiss James. He could find someone else to mate with.
Her phone rang and she looked down to see that it was Shawn. She answered. “Hello?”
“What did you do?” Shawn asked her.
“What do you mean?” She asked playfully, although she was a bit annoyed and hearing his voice wasn’t helping.
“Steven went crazy in his office. Things went flying and then he shifted and cannot unshift. He’s locked himself in his office and refuses to talk to me.” Shawn said with a little bit of amusement in his voice.
She smirked, “what makes you think it was my fault?”
“Despite being unable to open the door, I could smell you in his office. I thought you were at your cousins?” He asked.
Jena couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. “I sent him a present. I thought he would like to know what he was doing to me.”
Shawn growled a bit, and then gave her a small chuckle himself. “He became so stimulated he shifted. Although he’s not talking to me his wolf is amused. He’s laying down in his office whimpering. I have already cancelled his appointments for the day that I could, and I will take over anything he can’t do. Maybe this will be a lesson for him to just give in.”
“I’m glad you think so. I was worried after I did that you would be mad, or he would be mad.”
“Oh, he is pissed. But, he will get over it. I am sure he will see this as just another challenge. Just prepare yourself for the aftermath my dear.” He stated.
“Give him a little pet for me, will you?” She said to him.
“That would rile him up some more if he heard you say that.” He said.
“I could just come on over there and we could end this whole thing if you preferred. Maybe we can work on getting him to forgive us afterwards.” She stated.
“Don’t tempt me my dear, I won't be able to resist you if you stopped by.” He said. Although, he didn’t necessarily disagree.
Jena was sure that Steven’s wolf wouldn’t turn away either. She sighed, she didn’t want to upset Steven or hurt his trust in any way. “Despite all of this I don’t want to hurt his trust. I want him to accept me and us. I don’t want him to feel like this was forced.” She said sadly.
“I understand.” He said sadly. “I will do some damage control here. Talk to you soon?”
“Yes.” She said and hung up the phone.
Sitting down on the edge of the bed she decided she would relieve herself a few more times before trying to start her day. She wasn’t going to be useful or nice to anyone until she calmed herself back down.
At the end of the day she was starting to feel better. Her cousin looked at her with a bit of concern as they sat down to eat.
“You didn’t say that you would be struggling with your heat. Why didn’t you find a pack member to help relieve your problem?” She asked curiously.
Sometimes females went into heat, it didn’t necessarily always happen after meeting one’s mate. One’s mate just triggered it into happening.
Jena sighed, “it’s because I found my mates.”
“Mates? As in plural?” Her cousin asked curiously.
She nodded, “yes.”
“Then why weren’t they taking care of the problem?” She asked.
“It’s complicated. They are the River twins. One of them is all on board with it, the other is worried about their pack and that I might be too much of a threat.” She said with irritation and felt better about what she did to him earlier today.
Her cousin looked at her and felt annoyed as well. “I am annoyed with you. Your mates, it's not like you are going to hurt their pack. It will be your pack as well when you mate.”
Jena nodded, “he doesn’t see it that way. He’s all about business and doesn’t want to settle down.”
“Sounds like he just wants to play around more like it.”
Jena shook her head, “I don’t think it's about that. I have spent a little time with him. He’s just all work and no play. He can’t seem to relax or find other things to do aside from work.”
Her cousin looked at her curiously, “sounds like someone I know.” She locked eyes with Jena and was a bit stern.
Jena rolled her eyes and sighed, “yes. Exactly like me. I know I don’t have a life.”
“Sounds like you suddenly have one. Must be nice to have two hot guys for mates.” She said. “What about that other guy that we have seen coming around?”
“James?”
She shrugged, “I guess that’s his name. We have seen him wandering around close to your building. Other wolves have been reporting that they have seen him walking around a lot. It’s made a few of them nervous as he has been meeting with a few others that no one has recognized.”
Jena looked at her curiously, then remembered that Shawn had sent her a report about him, and she made note to go read up on it after dinner. “The elders sent him to me. They are trying to hook us up to end some disputes between our clans. They want me to have a mate by the full moon.”
“Why the sudden deadline?” Her cousin asked.
“I don’t know. I have the same question, but they aren’t giving me any response. Just that the pack is uneasy with me being all work and no family. They want me to show everyone that I am not going to be like the previous Alpha.”
“You are nothing like the previous Alpha. He fooled around and had many wolves he slept with. You don’t seem that way. You are a bit uptight, yeah, but I don’t think anyone is upset with you, or afraid of you or whatever. Although, I can say a few of us are worried about your wellbeing since you hole yourself at work all day and don’t take time off to relax. I was surprised that you wanted to come over and spend the night. Though, I know the reason now.” She said.
Jena nodded. “I am sorry. I don’t know what to do about that. There was just so much to fix and so many things to work on. I just want to make everything better quickly. The more effective and quick I am the more money we save.”
“I understand why you did it. But a lot of us feel you shouldn’t sacrifice your whole life for us. It’s okay to let us help you. That’s why we are here after all. We aren’t a bunch of pups you have to babysit all the time.” She laughed a little.
Jena looked at her, “I didn’t mean to make you all feel that way.”
Her cousin nodded, “it’s okay. Maybe now that you know you can work on calming down a bit and asking for help every once and awhile.”
She nodded. “Will do.”
“What are you going to do now?” She asked.
Jena shrugged, “I don’t know. I am starting to feel better. I think I have calmed down enough to go home tonight.”
“Maybe you should push the twins a bit more. There is only a week left now before the full moon.”
“I gave them a timeline when we first met. If we don’t mate by the full moon we will reject each other and move on.” Jena said that and her heart hurt. She could feel her wolf whine.
“Such a quick timeline.”
“We have no choice. We can’t let this go on forever. We have jobs to do.” Jena said frustrated.
“I don’t suppose you could mate with just one of them?” Her cousin said with a laugh.
Jena shook her head, “unfortunately not. It’s both or nothing.”
Jena’s phone rang and she looked down to see Jeromy’s number. “Excuse me.” Jena went into the other room. “Hello?”
“Hey, just wanted to let you know that James has been looking for you.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That you took some personal time and would be back in town tomorrow.” Jeromy said.
“I told him I would meet with him tomorrow evening. I don’t understand why he needs to be so persistent.” Jena stated.
“I agree. He seemed agitated by something. I don’t know what.”
“Something just doesn’t feel right to me. It just doesn’t seem right that all of this would happen so quickly.” Jena said to him.
“I would have to agree with you. After getting the chance to meet with him and talk to him briefly I don’t trust him.” Jeromy said. “I think you were right to think that something was off about him.”
Jena bit her lip, “I think I need to do some of my own investigating.”
“I’m already on it. Not to worry. I will gather everything I can and have it ready for you on Monday.”
“You have been so hard at work…” She started to say.
“Jen, it’s alright. It’s my job as your beta to protect you. Let me do my job. Don’t worry about it. I will be more than happy to watch your back and gather the intel we need.” Jeromy said.
“Very well. I will leave you to it. I appreciate it. Shawn gathered some data as well. Would you like me to send it to you too?” Jena asked.
“Please do. I will take what I get from it and add on whatever I find. I think it would be best to go spend some more time with Shawn for now.”
“I can handle myself in a fight.” Jena said to him sternly.
“I know, trust me I know. I am just worried that James might do something underhanded. Like bring some of his pack in to surround you. I would just feel better if you were around others to watch your back. I would tell you to go to the packhouse, but that is where he is staying.” Jeromy said to her.
“Very well. I will keep that in mind.”
“Promise me you will be careful?” Jeromy said.
“I promise. I am still at my cousin’s place. I was going to leave here tonight and go home.”
“If you go home, please have someone stay with you tonight. Something doesn’t feel right and I would feel better knowing that you weren’t alone this week.” Jeromy said.
Jena was a bit annoyed, “fine. I will ask Shawn to come over tonight.”
“Thank you. I’ll message you later.” He clicked off.
She walked back into the other room and her cousin was already finishing up the dishes. “Sorry about that.” Jena said.
“Not a problem. You are still my Alpha Jena.” She said.
Jena sighed and leaned up against the counter. “Jeromy is going to look more into James for me. He agrees that something doesn’t feel right. He doesn’t want me to be alone tonight.”
“You can stay here another night if you need to.” She said.
“I don’t want to intrude again. Besides, I would really like my own bed tonight now that I feel better.” Jena said. “I will text Shawn that I am on my way home and he can meet me there.”
Her cousin nodded. “Very well. As long as you promise to be careful. We would hate to lose our Alpha to some asshole. This pack was finally getting good again.” She said with a laugh.
Jena smiled, feeling proud to have someone say that about her leadership. “I promise not to do anything stupid.”
Heading back upstairs she politely changed the sheets again, and then grabbed her bag and headed to her car. Before she drove off she forwarded the document Shawn sent her and then she read it over really quick. Apparently Shawn tracked him back to his pack. James was in fact still meeting with members from his pack, and the interactions he saw were aggressive and very Alpha like. From the data he gathered when talking to a few members of their pack, James didn’t step away from being Alpha. There were two Alpha’s contesting to become the Alpha and whoever gathered enough strength would become their new Alpha. A game of sorts instead of fighting head on directly.
It was all starting to come together now. James was using her to gain more power. He would mate with her, gain control over her pack and use that to pressure his pack into merging with hers. If they weren’t willing to merge there would be a war between the clans. She didn’t think this would go smoothly. But why would the elder’s do this? Wouldn’t they of all people know what was happening?
She needed to have a serious discussion with her grandfather and soon. She quickly texted Shawn letting him know that she was on her way home and if he could meet her there. Then as she was driving she called her grandfather.
“Hello?” He asked.
“Hey, it’s me.” She said to him.
“How are you doing my dear?” He asked her.
“Okay as can be, I guess. Although, I have some concerns about James.”
She could hear her grandfather sigh, “I understand why you would be hesitant…”
“I have been given some information on him. Apparently he is still working with his clan to become their Alpha. He is gaining enough power to take over his pack and then he would take over this one.”
“I don’t think that’s the case. Who gave you that information?” He asked.
“The river clan did, actually. Jeromy is following through on the data now and gathering his own.” Jena told him.
“Why would the River clan gather that data?” He asked her.
She hesitated a moment, but knew it was important to share all of her information with him. “The River twins are my mates.”
“Are you serious?” He asked with some excitement. “You found your mate…mates?”
“Yes. We just haven’t made it official yet. We are still working on some of the details.” She said. Her heart fluttered in excitement just thinking about being their mate. She wanted for it to be true. She actually did like them, no matter how difficult Steven was.
“When are you planning on making it official?” He asked curiously.
“Hopefully by the full moon. That’s the deadline anyway.” She stated.
“Deadline?”
“Don’t worry about it. Just know that I think James is up to something and I am going to find out what. In the meantime, I think someone is helping him. One of the other elders. Who suggested this in the first place?” She asked him.
Her grandfather was silent for a moment, “it was Zed.” He finally said as though deep in thought himself. “I wouldn’t think he would try something so stupid.”
“I don’t appreciate anyone trying to plot against me. I am the Alpha of this pack and I will be treated with respect. If I find out he was doing anything behind my back to hurt me, or anyone else in this pack I will personally kill him myself.” She stated, already feeling a bit of anger rising within her.
“I understand. I will do my own digging and let you know what I find.” He said. “Be careful Jena. You may be the Alpha but you are still my granddaughter.”
“I will. Talk to you later.” She hung up.
There was a text from Shawn letting her know he was already on his way.
