Julian drove out of the Monroe residence with his mind in complete chaos. His grip on the steering wheel tightened painfully as Serena’s confession kept replaying in his head like a curse he couldn’t escape.
“She was always better than me.”
“I let you believe it.”
“I did it because I loved you.”
Every word felt heavier than the last. The more he thought about it, the more disgusted he became with himself.
For years, he had convinced himself that Sophie was the problem. He had been convinced she was nothing but a jealous sister who was ready to do anything just to have her sister's life. Every cold word, every accusation, every moment he ignored her pain had felt justified because hit'selieved Serena was innocent.
Now, he could barely recognize the man he had become.
His chest tightened painfully as the image of Sophie standing silently in the hospital hallway flashed through his mind again. At the time, he thought she looked guilty.
Now he realized she had simply looked tired.
Tired of fighting. Tired of defending herself. Tired of being blamed for things she never did.
And just like the others, he never knew and also blamed her.
Julian cursed under , theneath and grabbed his phone from the passenger seat. Without thinking twice, he dialed Sophie’s number again.
The call failed immediately.
Confused, he tried again but was met with the same response. After a while, his brows furrowed. He had not paid attention to it before but it was pretty obvious what was happening.
She had blocked him!
His jaw tightened as panic slowly crept into his chest. He tried again, hoping something would change this time.
It didn’t.
“f**k,” he muttered angrily, throwing the phone back onto the seat beside him.
For the first time in years, he realized Sophie might truly never come back. She had always stayed no matter how badly he treated her. Even when he ignored her, humiliated her, or pushed her away, she stayed.
But this time felt different.
He just knew it even though he didn't want to accept it. Not when he just found out the truth about her after all these years.
Suddenly, another thought entered his mind. His brows furrowed slightly before he quickly grabbed the steering wheel tighter.
If she had truly gone, there was only one person he was sure would know her whereabouts.
Lara.
Sophia's one and only friend.
As the thought crossed his mind, images of Lara's hateful glares followed, especially when he was being rude to Sophia or taking Serena's side. There was always this coldness in her eyes, like she could barely tolerate being around him.
Back then, he thought she was just another person blindly defending Sophie.
Now, he could see that she hated him purely because of how unfair he was to Sophia.
"She should be able to help me find Sophia if I tell her its to apologize." He muttered to himself.
Without hesitation, he turned the car around and headed toward the hospital. The entire drive there was suffocating, his mind being clouded with various thoughts all at once.
What if Sophie really hated him now?
What if she never wanted to see him again?
What if he was already too late?
Every time those thoughts came in, he would shake his head and convince himself he was only being scared for nothing. If he could just apologize then, Sophia would forgive him.
She was kind, after all.
Forty minutes later, Julian walked through the large glass doors of the hospital with hurried steps. Nurses and staff greeted him respectfully as he passed, but he barely acknowledged any of them.
His mind was elsewhere.
He stopped at the reception desk and looked at the young nurse standing there. “I need to see Dr. Lara.” he said quickly.
The nurse immediately nodded. “Her office is on the third floor, Mr. Vale.”
Julian didn't bother muttering a 'thank you' before he turned and headed toward the elevator. His heartbeat grew heavier with every second that passed.
When the elevator doors finally opened, he stepped out quickly and headed toward Lara’s office. The assistant outside immediately recognized him and stood up nervously.
“Dr. Lara is with a patient right now,” she explained carefully.
“Let her know I am here,” Julian instructed, tapping his feet against the sparkling floors nervously.
The assistant nodded awkwardly before knocking gently on the office door. A few seconds later, she stepped inside to announce his arrival.
Not long after, the door opened again.
Lara stepped out first with a patient beside her. The moment her eyes landed on Julian, her expression immediately hardened. The warmth she had shown the patient disappeared instantly.
“I’ll send your prescription to the pharmacy,” she told the older woman with a polite smile before watching her walk away.
Once they were alone, Lara crossed her arms and looked at him coldly. Then, with a sigh, she entered her office with him walking behind.
“What are you doing here?” she asked flatly.
Julian could immediately tell she didn’t want him there. There wasn’t even an attempt to hide the dislike in her expression despite him having the power to fire her. He knew her hatred for him must run deep if she no longer cared about his status.
“I need to talk to you,” he said in a calm tone, definitely the calmest she had ever heard him speak.
Lara let out a dry laugh and leaned on her wooden table, her arms still folded. “That sounds serious coming from you.”
Julian ignored the sarcasm. “Do you know where Sophie is?” he asked immediately.
Lara’s expression darkened further. “Why?” she asked coldly. “So you can hurt her again?”
