A week, then ten days passed with no further plans for helping Brendan. They agonised over ways to investigate the death of Mark Harris and drew a blank every time. Brendan was listless when they visited him, and Maeve could see the beginnings of despair in his eyes. She blessed the fact that her work at Reilly’s wasn’t too demanding since night after night her sleep was disturbed. Fear would shaft through her as she lay awake, imagining the fate that awaited her brother if they failed to uncover the truth. Now she too had dark shadows beneath her eyes. Then she met Bella, Kate’s friend from Templeton’s. The first days of April were unusually soft and warm, and Maeve decided to take a diversion through Glasgow Green on the way home: to enjoy strolling amongst the new growth and listening
