It did not take long before Mme de Les Mias materialized again. She let some time pass and then asked maestro Mountpellier if Adam Archer was available for singing lessons. The maestro obviously answered positively. Who could ever say no to the Countess? But the answer he gave to the woman had the ironic tone of somebody who understands that something is going on behind his back. To him, she had taken a fancy on the boy and just wanted to satisfy a temporary infatuation. The same mocking tone was returned by the Countess who smiled too, but of course for a very different reason. Mme de Les Mias had immediately sensed that Helena felt very lonely and was under pressure.
