"Hmmph." Someone elbows me in the back. "Sorry!" The person rushes into the band room. It’s Monday — the first day of band camp and day one of insanity. I"m trying to get through the double doors without getting maimed as students scurry in and out. I squeeze my way through and take in the enormous room with a dome-shaped ceiling. The loud rumbly burst of a low brass instrument draws my attention to the very back where high windows allow sunlight in. Laughter and talking fill the room, mixing with the rise and fall of trumpet jazz scales, the chirping of a piccolo, and snatches of field songs.
