Most boys grow out of their fascination for insects. I didn’t. There’s something about them that grabs me. The endless variety. How they move and function. Hive and group activity. The way they can effortlessly do what seems impossible for humans. I’m at the high school waiting for Taylor and her friends to finish band camp and marveling at an impressive specimen of cricket — a large green one that resembles a grasshopper. Since many of the parentals work, they pressed me into service to do pick-up for several days. I had swim lessons this morning and no lifeguard duty, so I was done by eleven-thirty. Today I don’t mind. This will be Taylor’s first day in a high school environment, and I’m curious how she"ll deal with it. I get the sense she’s popular, but she’s never been so withdrawn
