I slide into the front seat, and Dad pulls off. Gen gets smaller and smaller in the side mirror, and I get my fill of her while I can. We turn a corner, and she disappears. The ride up is dead silent for a while. Dad isn’t a huge talker, and after the fight Taylor and I had on the playground, it’s no surprise we’re not chatty. How could Taylor do something so wonderful and personal for Mom without us? It was like she slammed the door in my face and caught my finger in the process. It’d be different if it had been a private thing, but it was a public event, and she reached out to Gen. Why didn’t she reach out to us?
