Leif takes Bessie’s hand as they enter the backyard party. The air is balmy with the first blush of summer. Rounding the corner, she pulls back for a moment to take a deep breath. “You can do this,” he says quietly. “They are your friends.” He smiles encouragingly. Together they walk towards the crowded yard.
“Oh my God, Bess, you’re here!” Regina shouts at the top of her impressive lungs. “You made it! And just look at this gorgeous hunk you brought with you!” Rushing over, she crushes her friend in a hug.
Regina is what one might describe as larger than life – big and impressive in every way, including her personality and her heart. “Oh, I’ve missed you so much, gal pal,” she babbles on. “Where have you been hiding? I know you’re being home-schooled and all that but …” Regina hugs her
