Walking into the training hall already in wolf form, it was easiest way to manage the hiding of my gender. The pack warriors standing before our trainers belonging to the visiting pack of Alpha Jared, there appeared to be a mix of ages and skill levels. I had never personally met Alpha Jared, but I had heard he was a great warrior, and I was expecting good things from his men.
All the usual routines happening, my little brother Oscar stood beside our elder brother Boren learning the ropes of our training program. Our work here was critical to the survival of the packs, and as my brother Boren would become Alpha one day, Oscar would need to take over. He was young, but oh so eager and ready to prove himself to us all.
Stepping forward, I could only smirk as eyes of the visiting wolves set upon me entering the hall as some other trainers in the room began to shift along side me. A larger wolf with our Alpha blood. I was young, but still dwarfed many of our trainers shifting. Boren gesturing to me, demonstrations were held till it was finally time to break into pairs.
Boren wanting to see me put on my ass, he placed me opposite Alpha Jared. His fingers lightly squeezing on the Alpha’s shoulder, I could hear Boren clearly as he winked at me playfully from the short distance away.
“Kick my little brother down a peg or two will you Alpha. He’s been getting a little big for his boots.” Boren did this every time, and female or not, I prevailed against whoever he threw my way. Though I was beginning to understand, he was not taunting me as it appeared on the surface. He was setting me a challenge when he could, knowing that I would never again be allowed back on the field. Never again be allowed to do what I had trained for my entire life.
Boren striding away, I could hear his voice erupting clearly, “one in wolf form, the other in human. We need to learn to fight in both. Think as a vampire would, what would…” His words continuing down his usual speech, I only watched the man before me.
Speaking to me with ease, Jared did not seem like many of the arrogant Alpha’s I had come to meet. Ones that would not for a single instance lower themselves enough to train alongside their pack members.
“I thought your father only had two sons and a daughter.” Unsure what he was getting at, I also knew this could be a problem as he was not wrong. He spoke again as if realising the question in my gaze.
“He is a lucky man to have such a large family that’s clearly so close.” Jared’s golden eyes drilling into my own, my heart thudded hard at the sight.
I had not believed the rumours of Jared’s eye colour to be true. Our eyes would turn as our wolves surfaced, but to be golden at all times, it was odd to say the least. Did that mean he could access his wolf strength at all times? It could be a significant edge in the fights to come, especially if it could be taught. Though as it was, it was not a question I could ask in this form.
Feeling something strange in the air, my nose tingled and blood heated as I watched Alpha Jared across from me. In fact, my whole body feeling rather foreign, I could not shake the sensations bubbling as Jared spoke once more. As if realising he was going to get no response from me, Jared took a stance, a defensive posture speaking calmly.
“Show me what you’ve got.” My ears even pricking to attention, something warm simmered in my stomach throwing me off. A passive expression on his face, I could see he was waiting for me to make the first move. His body finally taking a step closer as if growing impatient, I moved in sync keeping my body in position. Feeling the warmth spread through my limbs as he drew that little bit closer again something was not right.
I was distracted, suddenly finding it odd that he had no scent of she wolf on him. The need to produce an heir for an Alpha would no doubt be heavy on his shoulders. I felt the pressure of having a child myself as a female, and my family did not even push as many did. Though my father had indicated to me in not so many words that Jared was interested joining our packs. So coming with the scent of another was likely not the best idea if he was wanting me as chosen mate and Luna of his pack, or at the very least a contracted breeder.
My body in comparison constantly held Jace’s lingering scent even after showering. Did that mean Jared was not lying with a female at all? Shaking the thoughts from my mind, it did not matter. My father would allow me to make my own choices for a chosen mate. Of course he would always support a goddess given mate, but I was yet to find mine.
It might never happen. And I was happy with Jace. He was my best friend and the only man I had trusted to touch me to fulfil my duty as a female. Jace and I shared a bond, we loved each other. Maybe not a soul deep bond, but he was my rock since childhood. I could happily stay with him within my pack, with my family for the rest of my life.
Though if he or I found our fated. We would both be more than happy for the other and support each other. We only began mating out of duty to our species and to fulfill our individual needs.
Jared breaking through my thoughts with another step forward, I finally launched toward him without restraint. He was an Alpha after all, and I should not have to pull my punches. What I did not expect was for him to move forward again. Most would retreat trying to read my movements. Snapping at his arm with my jaws, his free hand gripped a handful of my fur.
Heated tingles prickling across my body in blinding speed and intensity, a panic set in as I kicked out my paws throwing him in the air in his also seemingly stunned state.
Hitting the ground surprisingly upright, Jared straightened from his crouch staring at me from a short distance away with an unreadable expression covering his face. Having never thought this would happen, the second our bodies touched, I knew it, and so did he.
Our fates tied, our souls colliding, the impact was like an explosion, but the sensation was like that of a rubber band snapping into place. We were mates. Hairs standing up across my limbs, I was both hot and cold, happy and uneasy all at the same time. Such a blessing, so unexpected. My heart that had been thudding hard was now racing like firework lighting every nerve in my entire body, yet all I could do was wait.
Waiting for something, an indication of his emotions, he once again for what felt like the hundredth time began steadily toward me. Frozen in place, I wondered if I should shift back. He was going to know who I was one way or another, though I was shy. Being naked before him now, probably not the best idea especially in front of so many others.
Oscar running over, I jerked back as my smiling little brother crashed into my side startling me. Alpha Jared speaking out with no emotion that I could sense, insecurities rose in my chest. Something didn’t feel right.
“This is your brother yes? What is his name?” Realizing then that he was talking to Oscar and not me, my body began to trembled ever so slightly beneath my fur. Referring to me with his hands, Oscar proudly announced my name with his childish grin set upon his face.
Mentally reminding myself to reprimand Oscar later. Despite my name being gender neutral, he knew as well as I, that I would need to meet Jared in my human form. Jared wanted my father’s daughter, me, as chosen mate. He was also bound to meet me due to his extended stay planned at our pack for training purposes.
“Morgan Taylor?” His words questioning, Oscar nodded his head slowly. Still watching and waiting for something as his brows drew together now seeming a little unsure like myself.
“I’m so sorry.” Jared’s words spoken with an emotionless expression as he looked directly at me. Alarms sounded around me like a bomb. Jared’s voice clear and absolute once more, he spoke the words that I never thought I would hear in my lifetime.
“Morgan Taylor, I reject you as my fated mate.” Thinking I was a boy, Jared rejected me on the spot without even having a single conversation with me. Without even meeting my human form. He had a plan, and clearly his soul bonded mate was not part of it.
The harsh intakes of breaths sounding from around us. My eyes whipped to Jace’s now shocked expression behind Jared, before falling back upon my supposed mate still standing like a statue before me unwavering.
My soul ripping at my insides, I just continued looking at my mate not wanting to give him the satisfaction of seeing my emotions. Giving him no more than a slight tilt of my head as the pain filled every cell of my being, the world swirled around me completely out of my control. Jared’s knees shaking under the no doubt similar pain slicing through his body, my brother Oscar stood in shock beside me with his jaw hanging open.
His fingers clinging to my fur only seconds before, they now slid through, his happy childish demeanour long gone as he turned cold and hard beside me. Oscar was young, and yet just as protective as our older brother. His face twisting, an ugly snarl surfaced his lips growling at Jared as the hall fell to complete silence.
Boren’s attention from across the room drawn, he swiftly headed in our direction, but I could not return the questioning gaze he shot my way. I felt as though I were dying, my whole world crumbling beneath my feet threatening to topple my wolf. My insides convulsing so hard I thought I would vomit, if I had hands, they would be clutching at my stomach and the spear of pain jolting through me.
“You will choke on those words dog!” Oscars scream raging, Boren was at our sides in a heartbeat taking hold of the back of Oscar’s neck forcing him to his knees in submission. Boren’s voice barking out at Oscar for his rudeness. I could hear his heavy footsteps in a struggle with Oscar as I turned. Walking away, I held my pace not wanting to run and display weakness even as Boren called out to me attempting to get me back. The pain still tearing at my body, I could not… anything.
I needed out, I needed air. Knowing Boren was not yet aware of what happened, I tried to keep it together, but the pain was explosive. With blow after blow thrashing inside my body. Only one thought plagued my mind, I was rejected by my goddess given mate, my fated soul bond didn’t want me. He didn’t even want to meet me.
Jared saying nothing, or at least nothing I could hear, the fight continued between my brothers as I made it to the door. The eyes of the other trainers nearby who had heard the rejection staring after me, I felt their eyes like needles raking my flesh as one ran to my side opening the door for my wolf before I broke the damn thing down to get away.
“Morg! Wait!” Jace’s voice suddenly sounding through the hall, I had no doubt he was hot on my trail feeling his body growing closer, cutting the distance between us. “Morgan stop!” His hand touching the rump of my wolf, I could feel his hand gripping my tail stopping me. Pulling me suddenly in a different direction towards the woods.
“Morgan he thought you were a man. Alpha’s need to sire pups to continue their lines and pack. You know this. He will take it back, he will want you.” Of course, Jace had heard everything. Of course, he was trying to cover for Alpha Jared. Out of sight of everyone else, I turned my gaze around to make sure we were alone. Shifting, my body felt weak as Jace caught me in his arms before I could hit the ground unstable.
“I don’t want him to take it back.” My words a whisper, a shiver wracked through me as I clung to his chest.
“You don’t mean that Morgan. This will be a good thing.”
“It hurts, please Jace… it hurts.” Not wanting to have this fight now, the pain still rippling through me, it was completely unbearable. It was going to remain at least in some capacity until I accepted the rejection, or Jared took it back. Neither of which could happen till I met him in my human form.
“Let me go get Alpha Jared now, this can all be worked out Morgan. It’s just a misunderstanding.”
“If he doesn’t want me as a man, I won’t let him use me as a female.” The tears flowing, the only thing I had left was my pride and my choices. Shaking my head hard back and forth, there was no chance I was going to forgive this. There was no coming back from the betrayal and pain I felt.
Clinging to Jace. I knew in this moment without him, I would crumble. Pressing my lips to his bare chest, I felt Jace shift slightly beneath the touch.
“This is a bad idea Morgan. Just let it settle, we will talk to your father. Let’s not do anything rash.” Annoyance at his words sending a river of rage into my voice, I spoke louder and harsher than I should have.
“You are my chosen Jace… just stop defending him and help me!” My nails clawing into his biceps, I bit back a shriek as the pain radiated through me once more. I would never forgive this, this agony.
Jace’s fingers digging into my hips, he didn’t question me further, but he moved closer. His body pressing against mine, he walked me back till I hit a tree with his breath exhaling heated air into my scalp. Fingers moving lower ever so softly skimming my skin, he gripped my outer thighs with sudden force ripping them upward. Wrapping my legs around Jace’s waist as I had a hundred times before.
I hated that this suddenly didn’t feel right anymore. Pressing me back harder, the bark scratched my back to distraction as Jace grinded his c**k beneath his shorts between my bare thighs. His forehead touching mine, Jace’s lips moved over mine stealing my breath. Moving my lips desperately with his, tears streaked my face as the pain slightly began to fade, but the aversion to intimacy with Jace grew heavier with every moment.
Unable to get Jared’s face out of my head, I broke away my lips as another cry tore through them. Jace’s body that always felt good, felt right. Suddenly it felt wrong. Jace was right though, he was righter for me than anyone else had ever been. He cared and loved me without any invisible bond drawing us together, he was my best friend.
Desperate, I clung to Jace. I held onto him with all my strength no doubt drawing blood with my nails. Tears falling like rain, they were unstoppable and seemingly without end.
“Shhhh Morg. It’s okay, everything is going to be okay. I promise.”
His arms and body continuing to hold and support my own. He was what he had always been, my rock.
“Just make it stop.” My voice begging, my face remained buried in his neck hiding from the world. Nipping at Jace softly before giving up and burrowing deeper seeking shelter from the pain in the safe haven of his familiar frame.
“It will hurt you more Morg. Just let me hold you and nothing else.”
