“Well, Rose.” My father turned to me, and I searched his slate-colored eyes for the contempt he surely must feel. Strangely, although he was clearly displeased, there was no trace of the bitter disappointment I’d expected.
“I’m sorry,” I said, dropping my gaze as I forced the words out. “I failed the test.”
The very reason he’d brought me to Parnese was to become a member of the red priests. What was to become of me now?
